Can Sony survive its decline?

this has long been there even in the 90's ,SONY always had struggles with divisions that are making losses and debts .But I think is the victim of its own success and size .SONY management should cut down the company into manageable and independent divisions and have their own distinct branding like EXPERIA, PSVita and so forth .

Sony in my opinion is the best when it comes to quality but maybe they don't market themselves well and their products are expensive? Low prices and marketing are the way to go

Many of their products are really good, but they just cannot get it all together in a coordinated way.

On a consumer level, I think sonys biggest problem is over-engineering the products, and unwanted lock-ins.

In the 90s it was pretty cool to have disc-man that had more features and presets than the a boeing 747, but times moved on, everyone wants "simpler" now, but I regret sony doesnt see it this way, its almost as if they have too many engineers each one of them trying to prove there worth by coming up with useless (and sometimes nonworking) futures to products that dont need them.

I think the onion spoofed it the best.

Allso the fact that these useless features are more often than not tied into requiring a another sony products that will probably be discontinued by the time you get your device doesn't help.

Edit: Link should work again...

I believe in two products when it comes to quality and reliability, Bosch and Sony. Our previous Sony tv lasted 26 years without breaking once. We had various tv's of other makes which didn't even last 5 years, got another Sony again little over a year ago.

Sony are the Toyota of the tech world. They became complacent and relied on their reputation and are now being left behind.

I used to support Sony until the rootkit fiasco. Since then, Sony have been all about proprietary protocols and owning the ecosystem while producing a bad ecosystem. On top of that, their quality in South Africa has dropped terribly as we get the models designed for the third world but at first world prices.

Sony and Apple belong together. Apple should take them over. Win-win.

Sony is still tops in terms of all around build , image and performance quality , but Samsung kills it in terms of advertising and marketing , not many consumers do research before a purchase and tend to believe whatever they are told

Lol i'm a Sony Fan Boy but not with out reason

Sony still builds great products but the company will not survive on its name alone.

The day that Sony's local management told me to go get knotted [when I called to complain] was the day that I ceased purchasing Sony products.

Since that day I have purchased (thanks to a lightning strike) over R100K in TV and home theatre equipment, all without considering Sony.

I - for one - will be happy to dance on Sony's grave ...

Apple will buy out Sony, and then use the Sony platform to launch the new Apple TV's

As a consumer, you should never wish for a manufacturer to go out of business. The more competition we have, the better the competition wrt pricing, innovation etc

For the same reason I can't understand the mentality of fanboys that wish for the demise of Blackberry/Samsung or Apple, depending on who they are loyal to.

A healthy market is one with lots of competition. It works the same in politics - a healthy country is one with very strong competition amongst the political parties. When a party gets more than 75 % majority, then corruption and dictatorships form.

Under normal circumstances I would agree with you. However, in Sony's case I will make an exception: the sooner that they go under the better.

The arrogance - and downright rudeness - displayed by their senior staff when I called for assistance left me dumbstruck.

And - unfortunately - the attitude is international: as a starter Google on "Sony sucks" and read through the 39,700,000 complaints ...

THIS.

I think the root cause of this problem is that Sony is both a consumer electronics manufacturer and a movie/music production company. One influences the other negatively.
For example, Sony wants the PS3 to be the main device I use for my music/movies/games, yet they avoid supporting all movie formats that consumers want to use, such as .mkv. The end result is my console that is supposed to be this all in one media machine, isn't;
yet my LG TV and my Mede8er can play whatever I want so the PS3 is only used for games or Bluray movies.

Sony has always been difficult with standards. Betamax, own music format that flopped, UMD disks, etc. And they will stick to a losing format until a nuclear bomb in the industry goes off. They pushed their mp3 competing format on their digital music players for years despite its obvious failure. Sony seems very arrogant (somehow believe they earned the right to set industry standards, and the market puts them back in their place almost every time). I love Sony for their traditional quality and good design but they tend to overinflate/overestimate themselves. Will make a good partner for Apple ... marriage made in heaven.
