If i did a mb swop with a different type of mb, would this mean that i need to re-install windows, or would windows boot up and ask for immediate re-activation? Just a mb swop (with a different kind), everything else is still 100% the same.

Im sure its the latter.

ok let me explain to you what happens

1. if it a cracked version of windows the computer will boot get to windows and reboot will never boot, to fix it run a repair and it will be fine

2. if it normal windows copy you just have to re activate, although ive had a few cases where it does no.1

Its a total legit copy.

So, u agree that for example original intel mb swopped with a MSI mb, it will still work 100% just needs re-activation before you can continue.

If it does give a BSOD then recovery console can be used.

not necessarily!

if it is an OEM version of windows it still may not work.

Besides that are you talking about windows XP? Because if it is Windows 2000 there will be no problem whatsoever.

It depends - if it's identical chipsets, you might get away without reinstalling.

Safest bet with windows is to always reinstall after a major hardware swap like that.

I don't think that the motherboard specific drivers will match the new motherboard, and you may have problems with your USB arrays if the original motherboard was USB1.
But - you can re-install them I suppose.

usually it isn't a problem

if you have some serious driver problem, you just boot in safe mode, delete all possible drivers you can find in the device manager and windows will reinstall them from scratch after restart. Reinstalling is end resort only

i didnt go the easy way and did the re-install when i replaced the mobo last week.

rather have a fresh windows installation with all the right drivers than having BSOD sporadically hitting you later on.

overall, it took me around 2 solid hours to get windows XP, Nvidia mobo and GFX drivers, Sound card, and all the necessary windows updates via the internet.

K, update to this problem.

My father blew a cap on his mb. had it at Inter Computer who asked him R350 to backup everything cause his new mb gives BSOD so he needs to format He phones me, i talk to the techie as says its bull, cause ive done it before and it worked 100%. He then said to my father that its impossible and if we knew how, we should let them know. So im in front of his pc, with new mb, the only thing that they had to do, was switch of the raid in the bios for the 1st boot to work. Now the machine is 100% even with raid on.

MS has 3 days to activate, activated it on the net with no probs. Thanks for all the help guys, and i hope this helps somebody one day too.

I cant re-install cause my dad does not want to lose his pron :D (silly man)

Sorry for all the double posts...but you should download autopatcher from www.neowin.net, has all the patches rolled up, and its released every month, well worth it!

i say changing to a new motherboard is alone reason enough to perform a format
