Can Vodacom and MTN cope with increased data demand?

Sure, they are keeping usage to a minimum with those high rates.
 
Well at the current prices of mobile broadband, I am sure their networks are far from collapsing ;)

The mobile networks in SA (sans perhaps backhaul) are way ahead of their overseas counterparts mainly because this is the only space one could compete against Telkom due to it's strangle hold on fixed line infrastructure. Now, however, that there is finally some competition in the ADSL market and more fibre rings getting lit up, Vodacom and MTN should stop matching each others pricing and actually step up and start competing.

I don't care about the futile 21Mbps arms race. I care about more gigs for my hard earned rands.

Continue blaming telkom for your poor planning. You had 15 years to start your own network....bunch of losers
 
Both Vodacom and MTN are able to use providers other than Telkom for their backhaul capacity...
 
So I presume Cell-C isn't going to be part of new high speed community?
 
As demand increases, so will the prices. That'll make sure that the load remains steady on their networks.
 
Has anybody been reading the Blackberry network complaints? The answer to this is a big fat NO! And yes yes, I know blackberry has their 'own network' but this is still provisioned through MTN and Vodacom?

Well my first day and a half have been going rather swimmingly.

But there is enough network capacity (as far as the operators are concerned) but we need more!

Personally for me on MTN over the years, I'm happy.
3G coverage has always been good wherever I go.

But don't let that hold you back boys - spread the network and then spread the love by dropping prices or extending gigs like a mofo!
 
How can they not? I mean they are ripping the people of this country off. Even the poor has to pay their last penny so they MUST be able to keep up. They have plenty of money to buy better infrastructure!
 
Interesting to see how cocky MTN and Vodacom are. I can't speak for MTN, but accessing the Internet via BIS on my BlackBerry is a painful process, quie often. I basically NEVER get 3G speeds... My sources at Vodacom revealed there is a capacity problem relating to BIS... and in the mean time they keep promoting BIS like crazy! Ahead of the curve? I think not.

Correct me if im wrong but the local Cell Operators didnt always the right to deploy their own fibre/ backhaul. Its only since the last few years that they got the go aheads.
 
It's a combination of problems. who is bold enough to make the 1st move.Vodacom Mtn Telkom?Cell C?ICASA?WHAT?WHO?

I find it hard to believe there is enough broadband capacity on the celcos networks. Simply because their data bundles are very expensive. If there was enough capacity it would make good business sense to offer competitive prices to maximise use of the available capacity. In the mobile market its the economies of scale that drive the market, but we haven't seen this as yet with mobile broadband.
