Play one song through the main speakers while watching a video file (and listening to its soundtrack) on the headphones?

Well you can on the Mac.

I certainly can't do it on my Windoze PC tho.

More importantly - can *you* do that (listen to two things at once).
:D

YaY,,, Yepeee,,, Woohooo.

I don't see why not. It all breaks down to what outputs & inputs you have.

hmm..what if you ran a virtual pc, then played the music through digital out on that 1 and then on normal windows play your movie through the normal analog jack outlet :p

Yeah plug one into mobo soundcard and one into real soundcard then set 2 diff apps to use diff outputs.

of course it can be done. the pc can do everything the mac can do and more. hell, mac has now adopted using pc parts as their hardware instead of their own proprietary hardware. that proves it.

yes, mac's use of software to get the most out of the hardware in some respects is very well done. but the pc is much more configurable and gadget friendly.

mac cant write to ntfs drives! wtf!

yes, it actually depends more on the apps you use. The hardware and Windows XP can register multiple sound devices... these can be specified as default devices through the sound control panel applet. But some software can also be configured to use specific sound hardware (Skype does this also). I'm not aware though of too many multimedia apps that allow for custom sound config... maybe we will start seeing more of them soon.

rofl, this thread was again meant to show that the mac can do something that the pc "supposedly" can't do. SO pointless

Can certainly do it in Linux :-)

But to be serious, yes, you should be able to do it in Windows, provided the applications in question give you the option of specifying which sound device to use.

You really don't know what you're talking about. Apple's hardware being their "own proprietary" hardware goes as far as the stylish cases. What's inside, at least for the last decade, has been standard stuff. The last PPC were CPUs from IBM (G5) and Motorolla (G4), with the rest of the components being standard PC stuff. Before that they had SCSI discs and only before that (more than a decade ago) were there some funky stuff like their own bus architectures (which at the time was superior to anything available in the PC world). Pity they didn't have Microsoft's marketing muscle back then...

??? Just because you don't know how doesn't mean it can't be done...

and gadget friendly.
Wrong. Gadget manufactures are more Windows friendly. Sadly it has the same result.

And for what it's worth, Mac copes better with gadgets that follow some sort of standard. My digital camera presents itself as a USB storage devices. Both Linux and OSX picks it up as such. Windows has no idea it's even plugged in unless I load the manufacturers f***ing horrible software.

And who's fault is that? Microsoft keeps their API for NTFS a secret. Windows can't write to Mac drives even though the API is well documented and available for free. Boo hoo.
