Can you use gmail as your website email?

Hi guys

My uncle wants to register a domain name. That's all fine and good. Problem is, he doesn't want to use the domain email, he wants all emails to come to one of his gmail addresses. I asked him if a redirect to gmail is fine, but he insists he wants gmail to be the main email associated with the site.

I wanted to know if this is possible? Does anybody have experience doing this kind of thing?

You can, but will very unprofessional. If I saw a business using a gmail address I'd probably skip over them. It's like how sometimes you see businesses that use an @mweb or @telkom address. Soon as you see that it means they're probably a small time guy working out of his mom's basement.

If he likes gmail so much I say:

Sorry guys, just realised. He said that he wants it to display the correct name eg. [email protected], but just as a name. All the mail will go to a gmail address. No idea why he wants it like this (think he just prefers gmail) but is there anything I can do?
 
No, he can't register the domain like that. On the registry it's a straight ascii field with the contact email address.

He can of course do what he wants on his website.
 
Check that link @Chevron gave you, it is exactly what you need. :)

I've seen quite abit of people us gmail domains but i think it is due to not knowing you can purchase gsuite and add your company name. I agree regardless, be cautious too :).
 
Gmail for business? My company uses gmail and our email addresses use my works domain.

Not really sure if you're talking about the email on the domain registration, website or just on business cards etc.

You can fairly easily keep using your "personal" Gmail account and just set up a forward from a "professional" looking address, and then set up Gmail to be able to send from that address, and automatically use that when replying to an email sent to that address.

Obviously the better solution is do it "properly" with a gsuite set up and then pay for an account etc. It's easy enough to switch between accounts on Gmail/Gsuite.
 
I assume it has been answered, but yes, you can do it. I did. I registered an arbitrary domain and then signed up for Google Business (this was free at the time). I think it'll cost you a fee nowadays, but then you can map your domain to your gmail account and no one will know the better. In fact, the company i work for did the same thing. So instead of using a local ms exchange service, everyone got a gmail account with company domain.

Yeah just go into gmail settings > accounts and imports and add the address to the "Send mail as:" section and "Check email from other accounts:"
All your website emails will then come through to your gmail address, and you'll be able to send from it as well, like you would in outlook.
Initially it will only look for emails every hour or so, but that will speed up the more you use it, and if there is an emergency you can always click on the check mail now button.

i do just that with 3 other personal email addresses, all managed within my single gmail account.
 
For my company I use Google Mail for Business, back in the day when we signed up it had no charge per user but these days they charge $5 per user per month. All it costs us is $10 per year for the domain, 14 users each with a mailbox and 15 GB Google Drive storage.

Yes and definitely recommend it! But you still need the domain email accounts, and then just setup Gmail to send and receive email via the other domain account. As long as you setup the send and receive side all email are send through the original email server, but the difference comes in with Gmail's exceptionally good SPAM filtering, and also it's mobile apps you can use. Last but not least is the awesome search ability... don't think 5 years of daily email is to much to search through in a split second!

We recommend it to any client that is a startup or to small to spend another R100 per month on email filtering services or Gsuite.

Does that work without leaving a trace of Gmail?

Nothing like [email protected] on behalf of [email protected] BS in outlook?
