So I decide to close my acouny and call them to get a settlement.

They give me 2 days in advance, so that when the money reflects from another bank it'll be even. Simply phone back in 2 days and cancel ... all sounds great.

BUT, it seems Internet Banking is totally seperate? They'll keep debiting me for internet payment (on a non-existant account!) until I close that too. To do that, I need go into the branch!

Why can't they just make it easy to close an account?!

Indeed it's best to go to the branch with some cash to settle all the fees and close it on the spot,Credit card takes a few days before it dies though

Now they told me the opposite ... close the credit card over the phone with no issues. Give the command over the phone, press a button - and closed. But for the internet banking (appears to run indepently) I need to go into the branch

Seems so backwards, especially as I never want to see the inside of a branch again if I can help it

Haha that's correct, the card only becomes inactive for a time,if you happen to use it after requesting the close it'll activate again :P

Took me about 5 trips and 6 hours spent in the bank.

Also around R550 in unexplained bank charges to get rid of them.

A year later they send me a new credit card.
That was 3 phone calls and 2 trips to the bank to explain to the fsckers that I'm not a customer and dont want their card.

Yep, they charged me for months for a cheque account I wasn't using. Then one day I was brave enough to walk into a branch to kill it. Haven't been brave enough since to close the savings account. Wonder how much of that R50 savings is still left?

Inactive accounts get closed after a certain period of time elapsed.

But yeah, would like to know what they do with the unpaid bank levies that's been accumulating on a savings account

No ways. I had an inactive account for 2 years with them. I had to go into a branch and ask them to close it. The fukkers then charged me like R30 for 'closing fee'. I wanted to scream!

Same thing for my CC. Had to pay another R30 odd Rand just to close it. I was so happy to sign up with FNB....Absa are a bunch of twats!
