Hi guys

As I'm sure we all know, Afrihost has been terrible for the last few months. (4meg Business uncapped)
Streaming of any kind is just not possible anymore.

I want to cancel my Afrihost bundle and switch to Web Africa. How and WHEN do I go about this? Does Afrihost have a 1 month cancellation period?

Kind regards

No. You can cancel any time before the 25th I believe. Just go to your Clientzone, open the package and select Cancel Service.

I must give it to AH, their client portal is really excellent.

Thanks @DrJohnZoidberg.
I'll cancel the package and have the line transferred to Telkom. I'll also sign up with Web Africa, around the 25th, and have them transfer my line.

Do you know how long this process takes? Would hate to be without the net for a few days.

I just moved my line away from Afrihost too this week. I was told it could take up to 14 days but mine was done in one day.

Just remember when you cancel your bundle to select "Move ADSL line back to Telkom."

Why not keep your line with Telkom? Will make things easier later on if you want to move again.

I see what you're saying, @m0zy.
Web Africa will manage it for about R40.00 cheaper than Telkom.

How are Telkom's service levels though? I don't mind letting them manage the line if they will speedily resolve the issues which are bound to arise.

Where did you move to and what are your usage patterns... if I may ask?

I stream after work between 5pm and 11pm and then run the torrents from midnight till 6am.

Telkom have improved a lot over the years. And you are chatting direct to the main supplier vs calling ISP. Which in turn calls Telkom etc.

But its up to you ;)

Are you looking for uncapped again? I would rather recommend a high capped account. For the price of the AH Business uncapped you could get a 200GB + 200GB Webafrica account.

WA walks all over Afrihost with their current pre-takeover slimming efforts.

Would be keen to try this out. Average daily usage is 18gb though so would exceed the WA limit.
Also not sure what part of this 18gb is before/after midnight do can't even plan my usage. Sigh...

How does WA uncapped compare to the 200Gb + 200Gb?

Edit: See they don't have 6mbps uncapped packages. Oh well.

The Home 10Meg is super cheap though.

Just did the same... Had the same issue as you. They are rubbish. Even your google maps will load immediately.

What is their shaping and throttling like on Home?
At what point will they throttle my line? I need about 500GB PM. Bit less out of school holidays.

If you schedule your stuff for after hours you shouldn't have an issue at all.

Even if your stars go down, after 17:00 the shaping lessens up anyway.

Hey, that's much sweeter than I initially thought. So how many stars that you have determine how much shaping is being applied to your line during business hours. That's it? :) Say, if I have 5 stars then my line speed is unrestricted during those hours???? I'm talking about WA Home Uncapped here.

I've noticed that even with 3 stars, my line functions at full speed for everything (I don't torrent, so I can't speak for that) during business hours... I'm not sure what happens when you go below 3 stars, but from what I can gather, you get shaped the entire day until your usage lessens, whatever that may mean :P

Not too bad :) Now I have to decide whether to get WA Business or Home Uncapped. This time, I want to be F-U-L-L-Y INFORMED re the pros and cons of these packages before signing up.

Tell me, from your experiences, how long does it typically take to recover fully from 1 star? I imagine my WA weekend usage pattern would look like this:

(1) Abuse the account until it drops all the stars.
(2) Let it recover fully
(3) Go to (1) and repeat.

Chevron and DrJohnZoidberg have probably the best overview at the moment, so start with a profile of what you're expecting, what your'e expecting to pay and get experiences from others.

If you want to download the internet all day, you want as low a contention product as possible. If it's after hours, some providers cater for that very affordably.
