Hi all,

I have been a satisfied iBurst customer for a while but telkom has become a more cost effective option for me so it's time to cancel.

384k homedsl + 3gig cybersmart = same price as iBurst G1

Now I know there is the argument about iBurst being 1mbps and having uncapped 64k after the 1gig but I work from home doing web development and iBursts '64k' uncapped just isnt usable or reliable enough for my purposes. I download a couple songs a month and mainly just use bandwidth for uploading / downloading files for work + browsing my mail (intl) so 3gigs is about enough for what I do, but 1 is not.

Just thought I'd explain myself first ;)

My main question here is how do I go about cancelling iBurst? I can't see it on their site and I have emailed support but, ofcourse, they have ignored my email.

I am on a month-to-month contract - bought my own modem.

Cant say much about the Iburst, but TELKOM? Really???? Are you sure you explored ALL available options?? ALL of them?? Better hope TIAL doesn't notice this one :D

Email or speak to Shane Hamman ([email protected]) - he seems very customer orientated and said that he was responsible for cancellations after I explained that I was told to email Portia by the Account Department and my cancellation notice was ignored.

Hehe what other options are there? 3G is daylight robbery and ADSL has never dissapointed me (used it at the office for years).

Cape town iburst is different from Johannesburg Iburst. Ive tried both.

What exactly did you find btw? I would think the difference in international latency (JHB lower by about 200ms) would make a difference.

In any case, I was asking if this applies for MTN HSDPA or only MTN 3g (384kb max) I'm not familiar with how they charge their broadband options.

In Cape Town, I could play battlefield 2 for hours, infact, I had two people on my netowork play on SGS servers through one iburst connection. We played for hours/days/months and all was mostly good. I even did voip through to my office and got a proper skype account to make local calls. The quality was really good.

I arrive in Jozi, have 5 lil lights, an antenna up a large pole, and I am lucky if I can play for 5 min. Also, if I play Bf2, and someone else on the network even refreshes a page it often lags.

When I joined Iburst in the beta pre launch days, the network was like I experienced in Cape Town, but after the launch, there were a lot of hiccups, and things just went downhill. The days its as bad as its ever been :(

That 5% loss is this arb "disconnection" every couple of minutes. Basically about 20 or so packets in a row will just go AWOL.

Yes, the iBurst network in Cape Town is not nearly as over subscribed as in JHB.

Are you sure that what you say is true for all of JHB or just for your (and quite a few other) congested basestations? The amount of basestations in one area might also play a role.. in CPT you generally connect to only your one tower.

The international pings results and news of people playing CSS with very good latency in JHB sounds better than what you usually get in Cape Town, assuming a good connection and basestation in both cases.

It applies to MTN HSDPA or whatever coverage you can get. They don't differentiate between speeds like Vodacom do, same price for everything.

I'd make sure you get HSDPA coverage in your area. I live in what I consider quite a built area of the CDB's outskirts and I only got GPRS coverage, not HSDPA.
