I want to Cancel my vodacom contract and get that R399 Iphone 5 offer from Cell C. The contract expires in May but I want to move this month. I will pay the remaining months if necessary. I would keep the contract running but I want to port my number and I doubt vodacom will release it while I am still on contract. Any suggestions?

AFAIK, Vodacom will release your number for porting, assign a new number to the old SIM card, and continue billing you until you give them notice.

Why not wait for the LTE version?
Really? I am going to go ask... My contract is up in July but their reception is pathetic... I might want to go to Cell C this month too!!
If this is true, I would be over the moon. I am not paying my vodacom contract but will be paying my neww one so this will work out perfectly.

That's just Vodacom in general, regardless of whether you're on contract or prepaid.
I get much better reception on 8ta (now Telkom Mobile). Also moving over when my Voda contract expires.

My Vodacom contract expired on 19 May. I was expecting to have to head off to CellC to get my number ported over on 20 May and to my surprise my Vodacom contract was still active. Turns out it will terminate at the end of the month and convert to pre-paid.
I have been jumping between my CellC and Vodacom SIM's for the past week testing and I have to say that I am very happy with CellC in my area. Speedtest results are slightly better on Vodacom (8.2mbps in, 3.1mbps out and 70ms ping) but I get constant drop outs on the connection where everything times out. Does this for a bit then carries on good again. While CellC is slightly lower (7.9mbps in, 3mbps out and 79ms ping) the connection is consistent and a pleasure to use.

Totally area dependent dude. Best is to get a prepaid and test out your most frequented areas and take it from there.
I have seen a lot of bad CellC stuff, but where I live they are very very good. I work from home so am here 90% of my time so I don't really care if the rest of SA sucks. I will keep my old contract as a pre-paid SIM so I have a backup if I go somewhere where CellC is unusable.
good advice. So logistics plays a big part in the decision making process. I shall monitor my movements

I used an LG nexus 4 for Voda and a Samsung Galaxy Nexus for CellC tests. I used the same Speedtest server for all my tests.
I've been doing the same thing for the past few weeks and I've noticed the same trend; in general CellC is more reliable than Vodacom (I see regular dropouts on Voda) but Voda generally has higher throughput and lower latency (66ms on Voda vs 120ms on CellC).
