I'm in need of a second body that will mostly be used for sports and I'm narrowing my choices down to either of the above.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Why are you considering the 50D?

What's the price for the 1D Mkiin? Is it close to a new 7D, that might be another option and the one I would go for given the choice between the 3.
The 7D is $700 more than a used Mk2N or 50D. I'm on a tight budget and this is on top of the 400mm f/2.8 non IS with 1.4x extender.

Nikon D3S? :D
Dont be silly.

I can't speak for the MKiiN, but I'm far happier with my 50D since I saw its output in Aperture 3 - Aperture 2 really did a crappy job of interpreting its CR2 files.

The 1DmkIIN seems has a few advantages the way I read: AF similar to the your 1DmkIII and slightly faster frame rate are probably the most significant.

I'm guessing it probably has better low light, on account of the larger sensor, but a much shorter ISO range. To that end, I made a few 8x12 prints this week, including a shot of a friend busy writing his wedding speech, sitting outside with only a paraffin lamp. I was blown away by the result. Noise is not visible, and the colours are pretty much what I remember them to be, sharpness is not a problem at all (despite it being kinda soft at 100%). Best part of it, is this shot was taken at 6400 ISO.

In how much of a hurry are you? Jacobs Digital over here has a large number of 1D series bodies in their 2nd-hand cabinet.

Coming to think of it, the extra resolution (almost double) and extra reach that the 1.6 crop gives you might actually be useful to you. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the 50D.

How is the AF systems compared? Why I ask is this could be the deal breaker maybe for sports.

Lots of things to consider. On the side of the 1d there is framerate, af, and build. On the 40/50d side there is the higher iso, reach of the 1.6 crop, and the higher mp.

And I've got until sat to decide.

Can you get your hands on a 40D or 50D to try? I think AF is probably the biggest thing to consider. From what I've read on the forums both people coming from Rebels and from 1Ds often struggle with the 40D/50D's AF, and I'm not surprised - 9 f/2.8 AF points that are spread pretty wide takes some practise to work with. The biggest issue is that it's very easy to pick up something in the background if there aren't less sensitive AF points in-between. I've found that the rebels tend to be far more biased to whatever the center point is focussed on, which makes it easier for the the causal point&shooters to hit the right target.

But then, that's just my opinion. Best if you manage to try it out first and see how it performs for your needs.

7D is looking mighty tempting. I might sacrifice the TC and scrounge the rest.

I also need to heed my own advice and start getting a handle on video - the 7D seems to be one of the better bodies for that.

That sounds sensible. The 7D's AF is pretty good from what I read. It also has the new metering system that the 550D also has.

I'm more excited by the glass - I know, no IS on such a big lens might be a concern but realistically at 6kg there was no way I'm going to be using it hand held and slower than 1/500th.

If you now throw in the 7D, I would get that hands down. The day I played with it at the launch with Canon almost made me buy it. The only thing it
still needs is a FF for me.

The ISO is amazing, almost on par with 5DmkII
AF systems is out of this world.
Good solid framerate.
and its a crop.

What more do you need.

That list never seems to want to end . . . :o

I am leaning towards the 7D - it will be nice to have as a general backup and will be handy with my 24/70 or 70-200 on it. I'm just concerned about the build quality not being as solid as the 1D.

At this rate I have to wonder if I'll ever get a ff body.

For me the 1d bodies are just too big. If I was choosing (or if I had the cash), I'd buy a 7d today. AFAIK, it does have a bigger feature set than the 1dm2

It's similar to the 50D, with better weather sealing. It's a lot sturdier than the Rebels. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Price is my main concern. I need a second< durable, body for my smaller lenses when I'm using the 400mm on my 1DMk3

You'd be surprised how quickly one camera gets put down when the action picks up and you're reaching for a different one.
