Canon 550D

What??? I'm coming back to SA for 2 weeks in April, anybody want me to pick them up a kit?? Only R8000 :p
You'll still be out of pocket to the tune of nearly r1000 if customs stops you.

Nope! I no longer reside in SA so I can take anything in as long as I promise to take it back out again. :D
You might want to check on that before you make a costly mistake.

They can charge duties on any dutiable goods entering the country.

Bwana have you ever heard of somebody been charged duty when visiting another country? When a resident returns home yes. Do you get charged on all your gear everytime you go to the States or to the UK? Doesn't matter how new the kit is. Special dutiable items, yes. Things like smkoes and booze because they will be consumed while IN the country being visited. Same reason if you buy something in SA that you will take out the country again you can claim your VAT back on. Excluded are things you consume IN the country like accommodation, food, etc etc. I can even pick up a new camera in the duty free at the departing airport and net get charged any tax or duties entering SA as long as the goods are meant to leave SA again when I leave.

The fact that somebody "stole" my camera and said sorry by giving me money is something far more debatable. :D

By all accounts the D90's video experience leaves much to be desired.
It does, but if someone wishes to mess around with proper filmmaking it is passable.

[*] Higher resolution 18MP CMOS with gapless micro lenses
Excessive resolution again just like the 7D. I wish Canon would leave the stop this.

So, does someone in the market for a new DSLR, get a D90 or a 550D if he is looking in that price range. Bear in mind that he probably likes Nikons more and does not really need 1080p video capabilities right now.
If you want to go with Nikon why not get the D5000 instead and spend the rest on lenses?

I've been charged duties for temporary imports in many countries, including SA before I was a resident.

Wrap it up in whatever flavour of bull you like, you are trying to pull a fast one. I regularly take my chances at customs, here and in the UK, but I'm not trying to convince myself that I'm entitled to.

I've had the 7D for a few weeks now and the video is incredible and very easy to use. Perfect for a noob like myself.

I'm not sure what you mean by excessive resolution. From what I've experienced it handles those MP very well.

That's why I said the camera getting "sotolen" and me getting money would be the dodgy part. According to SARS I'm entiteled to bring in whatever I want as long as I take it back out with me except for the booze, smokes, perfume etc. I MAY be asked for a deposit to cover the duties but that is fully refundable on exiting the country again.

Obviously this is a risky thing and I doubt I would do it. I certainly wouldn't do it with a couple cameras all nicely sealed in their boxes because that has "import for resale" written all over it. I may be a noob but I aint stupid. Been through too many airports and customs offices to do anything like that.

Did you never get your money back when you left those countries that asked for duties on what you were carrying?

I wish people would stop thinking higher MP necessarily mean worse quality. The 7D's sensor delivers better performance than any Canon 1.6x crop sensor before it, in every respect. In fact, with the exception of the 50D, each successive crop canon sensor has been better than the ones before, despite the MP rise. The 5DmkII is also much better than the original 5D, despite nearly double the MP.

Sometimes we did, sometimes we didnt.

That really has to burn your britches.

The high ISO noise of the 7D is actually easier to manage in PP than on my 1DMk3.

Not really, because...

...similarly, the noise from the 50D seems to clean up easier than on the 40D. The chroma noise seems to be finer grained, so I'm getting similar, if not better results, overall. Especially since Aperture3 - it's decoder for the 50D is much much better than it was in Aperture 2.

That reminds me - the de-noise in aperture 3 is a complete waste of time.

Interesting. I've found it pretty good, at least compared to the "automatic noise reduction" thingy it had before. For the most part up to 1600 and some times 3200 ISO, it does a good enough job for me. Joise Ninja, of course, still does a better job, but not so good that I want to keep 80-100mb TIFFs of all my high-ISO shots (which is most of them) around.

Odd but it seems the de-noise is camera specific. It's available for CR2 files for the 7D and 1DMk3 but not 400D where it reverts back to "automatic noise reduction".

Yes, I've noticed too with my CR2 files form the G9 and 350D. My G9 files look mostly the same. The 350D files are marginally better, as is the 40D files. But the difference is day and night with the 50D
