Canon 550D

I just read on the other forums that some people are very unhappy about the new 550D release. They say for instance the 5DmkII is starting
to look outdated in regards to the 550D.
Some people cannot think logically if you ask me.

What sums it up is a comment one of the guys left.
Every Beginner worries about Price, every Amateur worries about bodies and lenses, and pro's worry about light.

I've convinced myself that I'm ready for an upgrade to SLR (in no small part due to this forum :)) - I am thinking of buying the Canon 550D when it comes out (pity about the lack of vari-angle, but I'll survive :p).

Quick question, I'm trying to get a feel for costs involved. I would image it makes sense to take the stock 18-55mm lens and an additional zoom lens.

I currently have a Canon S5 with x12 zoom. IIRC this is a 432mm equivalent. I think I need at least 75% of that i.e. 324mm. With x1.6 crop factor that would mean a 200mm lens? This is all new to me, so I may have lost the plot.

If 200mm, are there any suggestion for type of lens - and the price involved? Obviously I'd like to keep costs down at this stage. :)

SiriS, depending on your budget, try the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS or Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. Both are good and reasonably affordable.

@Siris, look out for a new or second hand 70-200 f/4 l
L. You'd be hard pressed to find a sharper lens for that money.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at the prices.

Bwana, do you mean Canon lenses, or can I look at Sigma too? (is now you refer to "L", that's Canon's premium lenses?)

@siris. Sorry, yeah, canon L lens. 70-200 is such a useful range its worth buying right the first time.

I second bwana suggestion on the 70-200 F4L. The 70-300 f4-5.6 USM is also a great lens for the price but the IQ is not as good as the 70-200 F4. On the other hand you do get IS which is a nice to have if you are the type of person to shoot hand held. Both lenses from Canon. No experience with the Sigmas.

 :wtf: Saw a 2nd-hand one with IS for R9,000. I would definitely want IS! And it looks huge! Hmm...this is going to be more of an investment than I thought.

Got my first look at an actual 550d yesterday. Not to bad looking. Looks quite a bit smaller than my 20d and the plastic has a shinyer finish to it (read looks cheaper). It was in a display box so I couldn't pick it up and see how it feels in my hands. :( I would think it would feel just like a 450/500d.

I would think this unit will be the next "quantum leap" in consumer photography/video.

The waiting is killing me! :(:(:(

Most dealers expect them end March. I'm either picking up a 550D, or if the 500D's price drops significantly maybe one of them. Not hugely into video, so don't think there will be too much of a difference for me. The extra money can go to lenses - I've decided to buy the Nifty Fifty (50mm 1.8 prime) as a start!

Although my heart is set on the 550D...

Can't wait. :D

Well here there is about a 20% difference in the price for the 500d and 550d kits (with the 18-55). Personally I would beg, borrow or steal the ectra to get the 550d if I was choosing between the two. Not so much for the video but for the improved light metering and CMOS. I don't know what price you guys are paying for these rigs in SA but here the DSLR kits are only about 30-40% more than good P&S and sometimes the same prices as some of the bridge cameras.
