Canon 5D replacement

Lol. As much as I love my 40D, and as much as I know getting a 5D would be an unjustifiable expense, something is still drawing me to it. I guess my 24-105L would really come into its own on a camera like that :)

I hope for your and bwana's sake the you'll find stock. They're disappearing off shelves here. I wanted to have a look at it (was getting wrong ideas again...) on Saturday, and the only place that had one in stock was Jessops, who wouldn't let me play with it.

Well, to be fair, they didn't have a demo, just sealed ones. But still... I was in the right frame of mind to unload my wallet on it. I'm impulsive when it comes to shopping.

That particular visit to that particular store was actually worse. I've been lusting over a fish-eye for a while now, but no one ever seems to have them in stock. This particular store had the Canon 15mm f/2.8 - on display! But the store attendant was kinda snotty with me when I asked to look at it, so I buggered off.

but.. but... :D

Like I said, I'm impulsive. I'll buy something like that against my better judgment. Just like the 70-300 I bought...

the 5d has no better colour than the 40d
the 5d is sharper for very big prints and can use ultra wides
other than that, the 40d is a better cam in almost every other way

I know I know. Like I said, I'm an impulsive shopper. Impulsiveness does not indicate well considered decisions....

I have been thinking about that 24-105L a lot lately. I used it less and less because I'm leaning more and more to the wide end. Aside from the few shots I took with the 50mm f/1.8, I don't remember the last time I shot at anything over 35mm. 24-105 makes so much more sense on a FF. But I've promised myself I'll pick up a Rebel (film) to try it out and decide for myself first - they sell for £15 on eBay...

You're in luck! :D
bwana's good friend, Mr. Rockwell, posted this today:

$34 is a rip-off! The 500N sells for £5 ;) 500N is actually the one I've decided on, more because it is available in black, and most of the others aren't (I really dislike the silver). Unless I can find a really sweet deal on a 1v...

Speaking of the 24-105L - I found a replacement hood, genuine Canon one, on Amazon for £20. They go for £40-50 just about everywhere. Should be here tomorrow :)

I wonder if they're going to immediately discontinue the 5D or keep producing it for a while.

And I'm still waiting for a 82mm filter!

I think they're selling old stock already. Just my opinion though.

Where did you order from?
Local shop going through the local suppliers - might not be the best idea but for something marginal like a filter I like to support them.

I like to support my no-so-local favourite shop with everything (new) I buy. I don't mind paying £10-20 extra on a lens if I know the shop will still be there in two years when I want to try a lens before buying it.

On a side note, I'm watching a EF 24mm f/1.4L USM on ebay. Two days to go and it's already on £265.00

Problem is Canon SA gouges big time (almost as much as Core does) so it make perfect sense to import from the US. I saved nearly r6000 for that 16-35mm buying from BH.

Yeah, the difference is less subtle down there :) My favourite shop here, http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/ has an online shop, but I like going to the shop anyway. It's just nice to try stuff out and talk kit with the guys - they're all photographers, not the usual clueless idiots at most shops. And they're shop floor prices are often better than I can find online.

The downside is I pretty much have Saturday mornings to go there. If I want/need something during the week, it's Amazon. I can order something when I get to work in the morning and, provided it's sold by Amazon themselves, and in stock, have it delivered by the time I leave...
