Got an opportunity to buy this camera @ 1.6k. I've never used a dslr. Is this a gold starting point? Is the price reasonable? Kinda urgent. All responses are appreciated. Thank you.

Pretty old but it will get you started. Price might be a little high but that could be a knee jerk.

Apparently bought new 2 years ago. Very good condition. should I check it out first? Not that I would know what to look at.

Any lenses included in the deal?

Couldn't have been bought new two year's back unless it was unshifted stock. They stopped making them in 2007:

A quick Gumtree search shows it a fair price for body only. With kit lens it's a steal.

Not gold maybe, but definitely silver. ;)

Thanx. So its a good start for me?
Don't see why not - I started with the 400D a few years ago and it's still serving me well . . . of course since then I've spent enough to buy a small car so be careful - it's a slippery slope! :D

Initially just want to learn how to take a photo. Been pointing and clicking uptil now. Will this camera be able to take a decent picture of the moon?

I think you just need a long lens for that ; doesn't need to be expensive or anything - even a basic long lens!

I used a 350D for a short while after my 40D got nicked. It did a decent job and for R1.6k it's still a decent body. Don't expect earth shattering high-ISO performance though.

Correct. The 500mm lenses that sell for $100 on eBay will do a decent job. Given that it's such a colourless subject (it actually has colour, but that's another story), the IQ of the lens is not super important. Covering more pixels with its image is the most important thing.

+1. I still use mine for macro because of the weight. Anything above ISO 400 is not pretty, but you can get usable results. Here, in Trier Cathedral with a Sigma 18-125 @ ISO 800:

My missus now uses it most of the time. Here, in India with Tamron 18-200 @ ISO 200:

To the OP, providing the camera is in good condition, I'd say go for it! Just be aware that this camera does not have the shaking sensor cleaning, so you will have to manually clean the sensor if you change lenses often.
