Ok, here's the sorry tale....

My wife uses a 550D, with 50mm, 18-55 and 55-250 kit lens. She's been using it for ~a year, her first SLR. Enjoying it, getting comfortable etc...

My daughter decided to study photography this year, and for this I got her a D7000, with 18-105 kit, a 50mm and odds n sods. However, she's decided its not a career for her, and will be heading off in a new direction next year. So I now have a house with 2 brands... and need to change to one.

I was originally considering getting rid of the D7000 kit, and getting my daughter a low end Canon body (1100D?) so that she can still enjoy photography, but as a hobby. And start adding to the Canon lens pile as needed. But now I'm thinking I should convince my wife to move to the D7000, as the body has more longevity, the 18-105 is a good lens, and get my daughter a D3100 body. And start collecting Nikon lenses...

Any thoughts????

The D7000 is definitely a better body but it might not be so easy convincing the missus to switch. I know a few guys locally who were switched to Nikon and while some love it others hate it. Your best bet is to let her use the D7000 for a while and then decide.

I'd flip a coin, or find out if the missus is happy to switch from the Canon to Nikon's interface. Both are decent brands and it sounds like you've done some homework on the various models.

I have a D7000, great camera. You have a bigger collection of glass for the Canon brand and your wife is comfortable with the Canon why change to Nikon? My 2c.

I should add that she has agreed to give it a go...

My 2 reservations about moving to Nikon are that the D7000 is a bit of a beast, compared to the 550D, in both weight and size. This is hobby stuff after all, and maybe the 7000 is overkill??

Will keep scratching my head:) And thanks for all comments!

May i add its a major switch, camera interface, weight, size and getting to know the buttons all over again. She should also consider which camera feels more comfortable in her hand.

Take em both to the zoo or something for a day and see which she prefers/performs better.

I'm a bit of a Canon fanboi but given the choice between those two bodies I would take the Nikon every time. It may take your wife a while to "find her stride" with the new camera but the D7000 is hands down a better body.

I'd sell everything but the D7000 body, keep the flash if you have one and maybe the 50mm, and buy the Nikon 28-300.

Gee... You spend ways to much on gadgets. Go look on the net at "blind tests" (people assessing photo quality without knowing which camera took which photo). This days, the quality of dirt cheap cameras is so good, even "experts" have difficulty to distinguish the end product! Your tv or monitor or paper (if printed), plays a much bigger role in the overall, finall experience than the "quality" of the camera used! And of course, the person behind the camera is even more important. Flickr and other online photo sites, are a living testimony of human ingenuity and of 21st century cell phone cameras :D Makes one think doesn't it?

Thanks again for all the input.

Bwana, bear in mind I still need 2 bodies. So I'll probably not sell the 18-105...

The Nikon D7000 is really a terrible piece of garbage. As a favour to you, I'll take it off your hand for, let's say R1000. Just send me a pm :D
