I could understand if you were keen to get a different format camera but a 35mm when you have a new 40D? Are you in need of a dust magnet? :D

I'd be surprised if you could get your dSLR glass on anything other than an EOS film camera. Let me know if you can though. :)

Hehe, no, the reason is twofold. On the one hand, I've wanted a decent film camera for decades (since long before even the thought of digital cameras were around). If I can realise a lifelong ambition - why not? They're cheap enough now anyway. On the other hand, I still want to learn all I can about film photography. Medium Format is a nice idea but I don't want to spend that much money on it. Besides, secondhand darkroom equipment for 35mm can be had (relatively) cheaply.

I'm not familiar with Canon's cameras at all, I only really took an interest in them when I started seriously looking for a dSLR. But I suspect you're right - the EF mount came with EOS as far as I know, so even if I can stick older lenses on an adapter for the 40D, I'm not sure it would work the other way around.

Your 40D will take EF lenses without an adapter, but there will be a 1.6x multiplication factor because of the APS-C size sensor. Your EF-S lenses (the ones for the APS-C sensors) won't work on your 35mm/"full frame" camera.

I know that. I bought an EF lens specifically for this reason (my next cam being a film one)

I was referring to pre-EF lenses, whatever type they were in the days when Canon's SLRs were fully manual.

Oh :o - I don't know nothing about that, either.
 
The flange focal distance of the FD mount is smaller than most other lens mounts, meaning that it is impossible to mount an FD lens onto most other cameras with an adapter and maintain the same focusing distance.

No point in persuing that avenue then - rather stick to what I know. I see K1000s go on eBay, sometimes with a lens or three, for £50-£100. I'm more than willing to pay that.
