Canon Powershot A720 IS

Bought mine last week at Macro for R1999.99:D
It's a very nice camera with lots of functions for the price.
8 mega pixel and 6 x zoom
Very good photos, it's a bit slow when using flash though.
Macro also sold the 2 Gig memory card for R199.:)
I am not sure if the special is still ongoing.

Isn't that taking one step back? I thought you were saving up for a FF DSLR?
A nice compact that shoots in RAW and sits in my pocket is always going to be leaps and bounds ahead of the spare dSLR sitting in my cupboard. :)

Anyhow - I'm waiting to see how Canon reacts to pretty much being usurped by the latest Nikons. I've got time - it will be a while before I outgrow the capabilities of my 400D.

It's overpriced [40D] and the picture looks the same as the 400D/5D/1Dmk3. (but 5D has shallower depth of field).

From the reviews I read it does have subtle IQ differences (slightly better high ISO) and has some other goodies that the 400D doesn't, but I'm not going to argue this point, it's not why I chose the 40D.

My choice was determined by the following:

1. Size - it sits very comfortably in my hand - fits like a glove.

2. I'm clumsy as hell. This cam has some weather seals and feels much more sturdy. Maybe I'm fooling myself, but at least I feel better about it.

3. Viewfinder is way better - pentaprism, bigger and much brighter. I struggle with the smaller ones and especially the pentamirror setups.

I'm not sure the 40D/400D matches the 5D in IQ either. The 5D has pretty impressive low light performance thanks to the larger sensor elements. At least, this is what I read. bwana can let us know when he gets his ;)

Dont hold your breath for that review. I reckon that by the time I'm ready for a better camera the 5D will be an antique. :o

Yes, it does have good lowlight, but image quality is nothing to write home about. :( (sorry 5D users :D)
for every negative review on the 5Ds image quality I've found 5 positive.

Hehe, the way I read it the 5D is due for a replacement pretty soon anyway. Not that I can think of any reason than bragging rights for me to get one. My first FF camera will be 35mm film...

Speaking of which. Is there a K1000 equivalent Canon, that will be lens compatible with EOS cameras?

Film? That bell hath tolled.

Doesnt canon do an EOS film range? You'll be able to find one dirt cheap on ebay.
Looks just like any other DSLR.
Here is a pic in my garden:

I didnt know you have a 5D - lucky. :) How about a similar shot with your 300D and the same lens. :)

Why not - grab one before they really disappear.

Yes, I've seen the EOS film cameras, but they're far more modern and automated than the K1000. What I meant by "like the K1000" was "fully manual and can work without a battery, like the K1000" :)

Otherwise I'll just get a K1000 - keep me honest :D
