So I previously posted about lightning damage to my line forcing me to replace my router and get a new network card. After doing all this the quality of my line seem to have decreased and I eventually got Telkom to come out and check the line from my side and according to them no faults were found.

I now have a new issue, the last time I was able to actually connect was on Sunday night.

To summarise:
The router itself shows that it is synchronised. (Its a Billion router btw)
I can connect to the router from my laptop.
In the connection status on the router it shows that it is not connected.
System check shows that the network connection to the laptop is fine and the outgoing line is fine, everything else fails though.
The system log on the router gives errors relating to the DNS server not being found or offline and that the call failed.
Previously when I had entered my details incorrectly the router system log would show that my password was incorrect.

What I have done so far:
Called Axxess (my ISP) and confirmed that the username and password I was using was correct, they were.
Tried logging in with the telkom guest account (guest1@telkomadsl), can't do this either
Sat on the phone with telkom last night for 30 minutes where:
My line was tested, according to them its fine
My line was reset from their side, no change
Disabled all my firewalls and antivirus software, no change
Setup a PPPOE connection from the laptop itself and not via the router, can't connect
Reset the router with factory defaults, no change
Changed my network settings from automatic DNS to specifically connect to primary(jhb) and secodary(rosebank), no change

Now I'm basically at my wits end, can't really think of anything else to do, has anyone experienced anything similar or have any advice? The only other thing I can think of is that a windows update was done on sunday and that stuffed something up...

that's very strange... normally if it syncs it can connect. did you ask telkom to switch your port to another one, and see if that made any difference? maybe the lightning hurt telkom's side of your line?

I have the exact same problem today (also with Axxess). Have even bought new ADSL router - no go. All was fine last night at around 10PM - this morning at 7AM - nothing.

Sync is on, Axxess says I'm connected and they can see me, but no connection.

@ Arzy : what area you in? I'm connected to the Olivedale 1 exchange.

I don't know if my issue might be related but when I connect to my Telkom account it shows me as connected on the router but I have no internet connection at all.

On my IS Semi shaped account I can connect but the connection is extremely slow.

I don't know what's going on

Sounds related - I can't connect with either a SAIX or IS account

I'm in the alberton area, not sure which exchange I connect to normally...

LOL Had the same prob with the Telkom Billion crap.... even exchanged it for a new one.... problem were solved with a netgear!

I don't have the Telkom Billion router, just the normal Billion you buy over the counter at any store.

Thanks for the link, will have a look at it.

Since you cant connect with the telkom guest account, I'm guessing your not capped :D

Try phoning Telkom ADSL and ask them to please try reset your port at the exchange. Usually works for me.

EDIT: Oh and last week at the office we had something simular. Found out that the voltage on the exchanges was screwy.

Here is the details the router gives me. I am pinging google.com and getting around 230ms no timeouts. But actual browsing/data transfer is extremely slow. This is using the IS Semi Shaped account. When I use the Telkom account(I use different DNS servers for the telkom account) I get the same results on the router the only difference is that then I can't get any data transfer at all. I am not capped on either account.

Anyone able to tell me if anything below is lookign wrong?

I'm using both Netgear and Telkom's own Mega 105WR - neither connects

I spoke to quickly. Last night in the middle of a game of Gears I was hosting the line dropped again and would not connect for about 10 minutes.

Line syncs but won't connect.

Telkom here I come.

My line started working on its own again last night...

Spent ages on the phone with Telkom on Tuesday and accomplished nothing, got home yesterday and just switched on the pc and everything was fine again...

Methinks teklom needs to allow us to bypass the useless procedure that the call centre forces us to go through.
or
Perhaps the procedure could be made public so that we can comment on it and help them improve it ... (dreamer ...)

For once I'll admit the call centre has been ok. Phone answered in under 2 min. But now it seems as if the Techs take 7 days to show up. I reported my Line fault last week. But it cleared on its own. Thank goodness it was never closed, but the tech still is no where to be found

My experience with the call center was pleasant as well, call was answered within 2 minutes at 20:30 on tuesday, took 30 minutes on the phone for Telkom to finally say they don't have a clue and that I must have entered my username/password incorrectly. I couldn't get the support guy to understand that my line wasn't even authenticating so I just gave up and decided to leave it a day. Now its working...
