Hi all,
does anyone know if there is a problem with the smtp server. Everything was working really well until this morning when suddenly I could no longer send mail. I use smtp.iburst.co.za (196.30.31.207). My MTU was set to 1492 and I haven't had any problems with that. I changed it to 1352 and still no joy.

I have tried connecting to other smtp servers, but no joy with that. Does iBurst still block us trying to connect to alternate smtp servers? (non-iBurst)

Thanks

Help Desk says another 2 hours to repair

Should be fixed in 2 hours time. Why can't they open up their network while their SMTP server is down so that we can at least send email via other SMTP servers?????

Does iburst lock out all access to other smtp servers?

Re: Does iBurst lock out other SMTP servers

I can't access another SMTP server. No settings on my side that are locking it out and nothing on the SMTP server side as far as I can see, but I can't access it - presumed it was iBurst blocking the relevant ports.

Hi All

The SMTP issues are now resolved. If not please let me know.

SMTP Server is back up and running

Emails are going out again - what a relief. Anyone know what the problem was?

Caught in the middle

When the mail servers started crapping out, I thought I would be clever and go to Telscum for my email hosting.

This works for the pop3 mail server, but unfortunately I still suck hind tit when it comes to the smtp server which has to be iBurst's. All day today is what it felt like. Absolute **** when you are trying to run a business on what you thought was a good, economical system almost two years ago.

Not so today.

Be brave, grow huge balls and take the plunge and go Telscum all the way (shudder).

I can't believe what I have just typed. The situation must be really untenable to have this type of unthinkable, almost immoral, almost desperate, reaction to turn to the Unthinkable Telscum for salvation.

iBurst, don't force us to do this, please!!!!!

Hi Ed, any updates ?

pop3 retrieval is intermittent - yesterday was broken, mail started coming through last night, some duplicated. Some local posts from today have still not arrived ( I known, one of my client called to find why I wasn't responding !)

It's affecting business without any known resolution.
Watching the pop3 retrieval . . . it dog-slow - sometimes timing out.

You can use external SMTP servers, you need to log a call with the Technical helpdesk and ask them to open the ports.

They resolved this for me in about 24 hours so not bad. I have never had a problem since then....

When I originally came across this port 25 blocking policy I thought it was the most rediculous spam control system out. I have since realised that about 70-80% of all spam originates from dynamic IP addresses that are used by broadband subscribers and this port blocking is therefore targetting a large portion of the spam problem.

If you want to be able to access your external SMTP server then you should be using SMTP Submission (RFC 2476) It runs on port 587 (although some ISP's choose a different port) and therefore is not subject to the firewalling of port 25. The access on port 587 is exactly the same as normal mail sending and it uses SMTP AUTH just like other external SMTP servers and at the same time it allows port 25 to be protected and reduces the chance of an IP range being blacklisted due to spam abuse or a compromised machine.

Opening up the iBurst smtp port

Having had my port opened on 19 Jan to enable me to use smtp.telkomsa.net for my outgoing mail, I have been advised by Telkom technical consultants that if I have any ISP other than Telkom, I will only be able to send emails to recipients who are [email protected]. Telkom will not relay emails to any other addresses. I have received failure notices every time that I have sent emails to addresses other than [email protected].

SMTP submission RFC 2476 was news to the Telkom technicians.

My idea of using Telkom's email hosting service as backup when iBurst servers are not available has been a failure. I still have to use smtp.iburst.co.za.

Why does that NOT surprise me... from previous experiences that I have had with a number of SA ISP's there is a serious lack of skills and knowledge amongst many of them.

IIRC gmail uses SMTP Submission for sending mail and my servers also support it if you would like another alternative.

Hi All

SMTP should be fine now. Let me know if not...

Thanks all, sorry about the delay. As things looked good, another issue started.

Finally left iBurst

After 5 years I have finally given up on iBurst and gone to ADSL (prompted by afrihosts unbelievable specials). It has generally been a much better experience although I was out for a whole day after a lightning storm. I am thinking of keeping my iBurst modem and using it as a back up :)
