Can't decide what car to get

I am looking for a car to get. I am 19 years old and still studying in University any ideas. My budget is 150 000. I would prefer something new so I don't have to worry about a service plan. And can anyone please tell me whats the difference between a golf 1, golf 2, golf 3, golf 4, golf 5 etc. I have got no idea what they are and people keep on talking about them.
 
It's the different shapes.
1 = Rabbit/Citi Golf)
2 = Jumbo Golf
3,4,5,6 = Are all the shapes up to the current one.
 
R150k? You're definitely not a student with a budget like that ;).

Anyway, look at a good secondhand Polo 1.6 Comfortline (say 2006/2007).
 
Well I don't really know what you want, other than a car, so can't give you more precise suggestions.

You can get a brand new Suzuki Swift for that price, or even a 1.4 Honda Jazz.

You also might have some good second-hand options where you could possibly get extended motor plans that could cover you for a few years.
 
Thanks everyone, I am looking for something stylish. Is a second hand car better or should I buy a polo. Or buy a ford focus what are you'lls recommendation.
 
You're in the bargain mecca era that's unlikly to be repeated until the next economic meltdown cycle. You'd be a fool not to buy a second hand vehicle now. A brand new jazz will set you back at +R150 000 for an entry level and +R190 000 for the 1.4 auto. Seriously look at the used car market for <20 000km, there are very good deals around.
 
Polo isn't a bad buy. It's high up on the hijack/theft market, but we still see a heck of a lot of Polo's on the road. They drive nice too.
 
Whatever you get, avoid debt like the plague, otherwise the coming crash will ruin you. The best car is a cash car, and get something which is easily serviceable, has cheap and widely-available spares, and has proven reliability.

I bought that for 120k and i'm thrilled with mine. Full leather interior, cd player/mp3 player, power steering, electric sunroof, air-con. It's my baby! :D

They are quite zippy too which i didn't think it would be as it's quite a bit bigger than my previous corsa i use to own.
 
Oh and i forgot to mention. They hold their value really well compared to other cars. I saw on autotrader and there was only like a 20 to 30k difference between a brand new one and a second hand one.
 
if your budget is a 150k, you can start looking for cars up to 170-175k. the dealers need cash and if you can pay cash, they'll accept a lower price!
 
In all fairness, though, should you be looking at cars that are that expensive? It's your first car and you're still an inexperienced driver - accidents happen.

Secondly, if you're happy with your car losing 10% of its value as soon as you turn the key on the showroom floor, buy a new car. You should also consider how long you are going to keep the car before selling.
 
I think certain Fiats will impress your friends. You can get a very clean Grande Punto for cheap.
