Hey guys, i would really like some help making a choice between the Samsung 40EH6030 - R5900 and the LG 42LM5800 - R6500.... some feedback would be much appreciated

samsung for me just bought the 40eh5600 with smart tv and I am amazed.

I shopped around for weeks last year comparing various TV's, including the 42LM5800. I settled on the 40EH6030 and then wound up grabbing the 46EH6030 on a special. The picture quality just outshone the LG units I'd compared. But YMMV.

I can live without the "smart tv" as my pc runs through my tv. im just looking for a tv with a good refresh rate (truemotion/clear motion) as il be mostly be doing xbox gaming, some sd tv and the odd HD/3D movie. only thing about the 6030 is that its not a slim design, not enough inputs and i sort of preffer the passive over active just because of the glasses. the 5800 has a 120hz Trumotion where as the 6030 sports 200/240hz but according to some reviews the 6030 only has a 100hz.....

Both are 100/120Hz. The 200/240 is the Samsung's Clear Motion Rate rating. Often misleadingly advertised with a "Hz" at the end. Ignore it and look at actual panel refresh rate (half the CMR).

The 40EH6030's clarity and refresh is excellent. Xbox gaming even on the larger 46EH6030 is fine. We've played a dozen titles ranging from FPS (GOW, COD4) to fighting (Tekken), to Kinect (Star Wars, Dance Central), to platform (Skylanders). All are perfect IMO

Hard to say. Have not tested either, but LG (IPS panel) usually means better colours, while Samsung (S-PVA panel) usually means better black levels and contrast ratio.

I would take the Samsung, but the 2" of the LG is quite nice.

Go with the biggest you can afford. Buyers always end up wishing they went/could have gone bigger.

Go to as many shops as you can and try and view the TV's side by side (ignoring the sales-chatter)

To add, try view them under similar lighting conditions to what you have at home, as well as from a similar viewing distance.

I recommend then taking the TVs out of 'Dynamic' picture mode, and setting each TV to 'Movie Mode' with default sub-settings (unless you have time to fiddle). This gives the best picture quality for film/movies. You can then adjust the brightness/contrast/backlight sub-settings at home.

Also, perhaps weigh up 46/47" 50Hz LCD vs 40" 100Hz LCD, especially if you sit further than IMO 2.5-3m.

Goodluck trying to ignore that sales talk.... 40-42" is perfect size for my lounge area, i wouldnt want to go bigger than that. I'll see if i can play around with the settings.

Is it also true that passive 3D doesnt disaply FULL HD? apparently it only displays half the res

I bought the LG 42LM5800 last year September and not once have I regretted my purchase. The picture quality is excellent (atleast to me and all my friends and family members). I mainly use the TV for my media server (connected via HDMI), 3D and normal Blu Ray, XBOX and to watch soccer and other sports. The quality really is fantastic.

The 3D is also brilliant and haven't had a single problem with the TV at all.

Well that's just my 2 cents, at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference but I can vouch for that TV.

The LM5800 has a LG motion rating of 200MCI which is equivalent to the Samsung EH6030's 200CMR, so essentially the same thing.

Both have 100/120Hz engines/panels and perform LED back-light scanning to raise the perceived motion rating to 200/240Hz (according the them).
