Hey all,

So yesterday I wanted to get my contract. I went in to an MTN shop and told them I want a contract for the iPhone 6S for R559 p/m.

I provided them 3 months pay slips, 3 months bank statements, a proof of residence from my brother cause I live with him (so a letter stating I live with him, signed by him, me and two witnesses and his ID and a copy of the leasse), as well as my ID.

I got turned down because I don't have a credit history...

Thing is, I lived in the UK all nearly my life and moved to SA in July, so ofc I'm not gonna have a credit history.

Is there no way for me to get a mobile contract in SA?

Get a edgars account, woolworths account, buy about R200 to R300's worth of stuff.

Pay if off over 3/4 months.

Reapply.

You'll get a contract - you need to show 'some sort' of history.

Sad thing is, in SA you have to have debit in order to credit more debt, if you don't have any accounts you have to open up a clothing and buy on credit and pay it of in a few months, in order to create a payment history. Maybe also try applying for a credit card and maybe buy the phone onyour credit then you can pay that off ?

Getting a credit card and using your budget facility feature is better than buying from places that use RCS etc.
That's IMO.

Someone I know is in a similar situation. He can't get a credit card due to a lack of history... Start with stores, then you can get a credit card and contract in a few months time

Why on earth do you want to get a contract? Are you crazy? Buy your phone cash and get a prepaid sim. Contracts are for poor people and fools.

Do you always talk so much ****?

I've had a contract for the last 8 years. I don't have one because I am poor. I have one for the convince of not topping up every two minutes or loading new data bundles and crap like that on. At one point I switched to Pay as you go to see the difference and it was marginally more expensive (Call wise) than being on a contract. Also I get to upgrade my phone every two years without laying out silly amounts of money on the device each time.

A lot of business people also have contracts, it makes sense when you spend a lot of time talking on the phone as it's definitely cheaper.

This.

For someone who got paid in pounds one would assume you can afford an iPhone cash

This works after only 3 payments.

Prepaid is for the poor, I'm cancelling my contract now to save money.
