Hi Guys

I have in my posession a 3TB internal HDD that I put into an external case and used as an external HDD.
I don't know what happened, but maybe it was taken out, and used in another case etc. Or maybe another damager drive was put into the external case and shorted it out, then the 3TB put back in..

Anyway, when I plug it in to my mb and boot up using windows it asks me to format. If I boot up using Ubuntu I can only see the drive in GParted or Disks.

Gparted says HDD is unmounted and there is a problem with the file system. Disks SMART says that the disk overheated in the past.

This is not my area of expertise, and I don't know how to go about retrieving the data off the drive.

You should consider paying someone to recover the data then.
Whatever you do to the drive now may reduce their chances of recovering anything.

Wasn't Ockie complaining about a similar problem with Ubuntu 12.04 recently?

It might be a good idea to download the latest gparted live and see what that reports.

Herm.. sounds serious. I'll give your option a go Mick, as I'm in PE too. Well that and it might avoid the whole data recovery thing. Thank you all for your input so far.

Testdisk worked like a bomb, all the important stuff copied over onto another HD. No errors. Beginners luck

You should be able to get data off. I had this issue recently with my seagate expansion 3tb.

I can't remember the name of the program I used, because it was the first time. Of the stuff I tried to get off, 80% was recovered successfully.

Obviously once you are done with that, you just need to repartition the drive and it should work fine again.

I don't know anything about this, but could I repartition with gparted, and then copy all the data into the new partition with testdisk?

I did have a external HDD problem, but with the newer 14.04 Ubuntu. Going down to 12.04 fixed it. Something in 14.04 does not like my external drive. :( If ge clicks on that red exclamation mark it will give him the errors that Gparted is giving. But in my case, when I plugged in the drive and tried to mount it it would also give a long error.

I suggest you see if it can be formatted to NTFS using gparted and, if that works, format again under windows - fingers crossed :)

Drive not being picked up not in bios nowhere, plug it in hear clicking, but otherwise nada,

Controller board fried? Ideas?

Nothing you can do. Faulty heads, high chance of media/disc damage, lower chance of recovery especially if dropped.

Toss the drive is the data isn't important.

That's exactly my thought, so swapping controller boards wont help at all?

Nope, you can find a matching PCB but the drive will fail to initialise. Nowadays (since at least 5 years ago) each PCB is unique to the drive it is manufactured with. Replacement PCBs need to be adapted to the faulty drive by the pros.

So even for a few min the drive wont work with this fix?

That's what I thought exactly, but now I'm sure of it.....
