I was using Crimson 16.3.2, when I update to any newer drivers (tried both the recommended and optional updates), I can't overclock.

I'm using Msi afterburner.
I did a rollback to 16.3.2 and it works again now.

But the whole reason I want to update drivers is because I think my drivers are a bit ****ed.

Any idea how to OC with the newer drivers?

Did you download the drivers from the MSI website? Have you tried downloading the latest version of Afterburner?

Update: Looks like AMD forces you to use "Wattman" Amd's own OC software.

I used it. It's ****. You can't save profiles with it and it's very unintuitive. I have the 290 version which is a barebones version compared to the 480/580 version.

also with the exact same OC I get worse performance.

Guess I gotta stick with my previous drivers.

Had trouble getting more than 5 gpu's working with newer drivers, installed the latest 17.6.2 a few days ago and everything is working great. All 6 RX580's up and running, afterburner working fine for overclocking. Miner is stable as can be.

Damn. For some reason I can't change anything on my 290 in it, but I can the 1050

This is my first time ever having issues with GPU drivers lawl

Radeon Crimson 15.12 has the best compatibility with Hawaii/Grenada chips. Although, there are some issues with driver updates that will cause Wattman to bug out and claim that nothing's being changed. The only thing that works in that case is AMD's uninstallation tool, followed by a reboot.

If you're having trouble with changing clocks on Afterburner with the latest drivers, make sure you've done a clean installation of Crimson 17.x and Afterburner, and then enable extended third-party voltage options inside Afterburner. Some Hawaii chips need this enabled to overclock properly.
