Can't Ping server with laptop

Hi guys,

I have a laptop with me, just installed a fresh copy of xp and it's drivers, and I am unable to ping the server to put this machine on the domain.

The lan says connected but the pinging fails. I have disabled the firewall to this laptop (just installed AVG IS) and I am still unable to ping the server (or any of the machines on the domain) I also cant ping the router.

If I plug the laptop directly into the router I can ping the router and also the server. I have tested the ethernet port and it definitely works (using the same fly lead). Edit: I've tested this machine on atleast 5 other ports now.

The reason I formatted was because of this issue but that doesnt seem to have helped so I think the issue may be on the server (03). I cant see any banned computers on the directory service.

Have tried static & DHCP. This is the network structure:

laptop (10.10.1.43 & 192.168.1.43) ------->Switch -------> Server (10.10.1.1) This ping fails.
laptop (10.10.1.43 & 192.168.1.43) ------->Switch -------> Router (192.168.1.1) This ping fails.

laptop (10.10.1.43 & 192.168.1.43) ------->Router -------> Server This ping resolves to both the router & Server.

Once again, I'm stumped...

what kind of switch is this?
it seems to be the common denominator with the failed pings?

any chance its a managed switch which we can do some debugs on?

you're not using a crossover cable by accident or something...?

Just rechecked, Cable is a straight.

3com Baseline switch, unmanaged as far as I can tell :/

This laptops was working (on the network) a while back then just all of a sudden stopped.
I definately think that this network structure could be improved upon (and is currently the cause of this problem) So just keep posted on this thread, I will post a graphic breakdown of what the entire structure looks like in a bit..

can you do a dump on the laptop interfaces when connected to the switch?

What is your internal network addressing? If you do a traceroute to the server, what happens?

Can you ping the laptop from the server?

If you are getting a DHCP address then you are reaching something. Do a traceroute to see where it stops along the network. Is there by any chance some typ of mac authentication on the server/router?

Baseline is unmanaged, Baseline Plus is managed. I don't think it's the switch though.

Uninstall AVG IS. Even though you disabled it it can sometimes cause problems. Delete it's folder & remove traces of it in the registry.
If this still does not work remove the AV software as per above.
Also check to see that the windows firewall is off.
Is the netmask & default gateway specified correctly?
Do you have any VPN software installed?

Good point on the DHCP....cant be router, since he is successful when pluggin directly into it...just not when going through the switch...

Dont think its AV....since he has no issues once connected directly to router...and he has done a re-install
Netmask and default gateway could be an issue, however, DHCP would be providing this, and he would have alot more machines with issues then? (unless its a bad dhcp reserve..)

Its a pretty weird issue...dumping on the interface of the nic will show packet transfer and flow, and help decide where the issue actually lies..
I assumed it would be a switch issue, since its the common failure in the link...without it, everything works... (IE plugging directly into router)

My money is still on AVG IS being the cause. It has a habbit of learning some schit and once disabled somehow retains those settings.

Looks like it is a faulty switch. If you can ping the router and the server when directly plugged into the router then it cannot be the firewall as the switch is unmanaged.

My network structure from the laptop to server is:

Laptop ----> switch -----> switch -----> switch -----> server

If I bypass the first two switches and go directly to the last switch that the server is on then I am able to ping the server. But why can all the other PC's ping the server from this same setup?

Just out of interest why does ipconfig not bring up the mac address of your network card?

Well spotted. The NIC has no MAC address for some reason. Switches read MAC address, so no MAC = switch wont pass packets.

Try replace the NIC in that machine or re-install the drivers.

Its why i asked what switch's you are using, i suspected some kind of Mac address filtering etc on one of them..

According to OP the machine has been reloaded...and it works with other switches....
Its a strange issue....

try use SMAC to spoof your mac address, or change the relevant windows registry entry...
test...

Haha, hopefully this is the cause, would make sense to me. downloading smac atm will report on who gets the Windhoek!

The fact that no MAC address is displayed tells me there is something wrong with the ethernet port or it's drivers. Dodge install maybe.

The machine only works when connected to the same switch as the server or directly to the router. This tells me frames are not being propagated to the other switches and it might be getting by on straight broadcasts.

jprheeder,

What happens if you manually configure a MAC address? Go to local area connection, right click & go properties, select configure next to the lan card, go advanced, Network Address and enter 00241d18c624
Alternatively try and click on the connection and 'repair' it.
Did you uninstall AVG IS?
If you look in the routers ARP table what details does it provide for this notebooks IP address?
What's the make & model of this notebook? LAN Chipset drivers. Which drivers did you use, link?
