The fact that no MAC address is displayed tells me there is something wrong with the ethernet port or it's drivers. Dodge install maybe.

The machine only works when connected to the same switch as the server or directly to the router. This tells me frames are not being propagated to the other switches and it might be getting by on straight broadcasts.

jprheeder,

What happens if you manually configure a MAC address? Go to local area connection, right click & go properties, select configure next to the lan card, go advanced, Network Address and enter 00241d18c624
Alternatively try and click on the connection and 'repair' it.
Did you uninstall AVG IS?
If you look in the routers ARP table what details does it provide for this notebooks IP address?
What's the make & model of this notebook? LAN Chipset drivers. Which drivers did you use, link?

Hmm, possibly if we see if it gets a vali MAC address when connecting directly to the router we can see if there is a fault on the nic/OS or not.

Great Success!! Once the NIC has been configured with a valid MAC address those replies were flowing in from the server! :D

This machine was working fine until one day the staff member complained of network connectivity issues, Didnt think it was going to be this ridiculous though.

After formatting twice, writing the NIC off as broken, all that was needed was a silly MAC address! If I mybb had the function, I would karma/mana you all! haha

All of you this is on me:

Cold one for the weekend!

sweet!!! would still like to know if it gets valid mac address if plugged straight into the router/last switch..... just for curiosity sake
My guess is that ponder is right about it surviving on broadcasts though...

It still bothers me though that you have to input a MAC address, it should be picked up from the hardware.

In future supply pertinent information upfront so we don't all run in circles :D

I google a bit earlier wrt nForce & MAC 00-00-00-00-00-00 and it seems to be a common issue with some nForce chipset LAN controllers in XP & VM's. That's why I asked for more info regarding this.

Got the drivers from the HP website. It's a dv6000. Uses nForce Drivers...

dv6000 is a series number with many laptops in that range, you have to be more specific. Look at the labels underneath the notebook for the exact model number. More up to date drivers can be downloaded from the nVidia site.
