Can't send sms to UK

I'm on MTN prepaid and am trying to send sms (and whatsapp messages) to family in the UK. But none of my international sms's get through. I know I've got the numbers correct because I can phone them and talk. Are thre any settings I'm supposed to tweak?

Did you port from another operator?

call MTN and complain.

I had a similar problem a few days ago (on contract). The gent claimed to have reset something or another. It works again.
