Can't settle on a good ISP... Help!

Morning,

The thresholds on the 2MB and 4MB premium accounts are approximately 200GB and 400GB respectively.

We do not have any thresholds on our unshaped accounts ;)

Let me know if you would like to return to MWEB :)

What does your 4 meg premium cost per month?

I could go look on the website but it's a pain on a mobile phone.

Also @Mweb Guy,

Are the Mweb Premium Home Uncapped accounts shaped during the day? I assume it will definitely be shaped once you exceed the threshold, but what about before the 200GB/400GB threshold is reached?

I used to have a 1mb Home Uncapped, which was just over a month ago, and I don't remember anything 'wrong' with the account. But 1mb could be different from 2mb and 4mb.

Does the home uncapped get shaped during the day? I see no mention of it, but people say that it does. Also, does Afrihost also make use of a rolling-window over x-days? Or how do they monitor over-usage of the networks?
I see the top user for the 4mb Home Uncapped has downloaded just over 1TB, which means they must have been unthrottled and unshaped 24/7 the entire month.

Trial accounts don't really reflect the long-term performance of many ISPs. All ISPs trial accounts perform perfectly.

The home accounts do get shaped sometimes - but that is entirely dependent on region. For example, down here in the cape, I havnt been shaped for months. Also - shaping only affects HTTP downloads and P2P (Torrents/NNTP) - so all streaming is unshaped 24/7.

The shaping system works on a dynamic bases - meaning if an area is under load, its clients will be shaped. There is no rolling window or anything, and the system tries to minimise shaping at all times.

Also - regarding the trial account - I was just suggesting it so you could check out the ping :D

Z

P.S. I would always recommend a business account if you have the resources

My 2 cents worth..

I am not a big downloader (about 110GB per month on average) but I do browse a lot, stream music, YouTube, and play some online games with Xbox Live sometimes, and do a few NZB downloads. I was on Mweb 4Meg Premium Uncapped but downgraded to the Mweb 6Meg Standard Uncapped because it has about 160GB threshold which is enough for me and I sync at 6Megs to the exchange. That said, I have been on leave since 13th December and I have experienced a very good performance everyday at any hour. I have streamed music, had a NZB download occurring and been browsing at the same time without any performance issues. I seems that if you remain "Unthrottled", your experience will remain good.

So my opinion is that if you are a small downloader like myself but want decent experience, Mweb might be a good choice.

@ MWeb Guy, is that threshold correct? 160 gig - that's just about the sweet spot for me...

So for R359, uncapped (well, soft cap up to 160 gig at home) and then a separate account for work (don't need a lot there so something like R54 for 3 gig from Plugg would suit me just fine).

That would take me to R413 for two connections which is R45 cheaper than what I am currently paying (R429 to Plugg + R29 to MWeb for email addy preservation)

Listen to Zertop... I did, and I am quite pleased with the results.

Signed up for an Afrihost account through a referral link from a friend (can send you one if you like :erm: ) and got 50% off the first month. Done round 70GB already and everything is still running like a charm. I am on 4mb business account.

Support centre is great too. They were very helpful and got my 1-2 queries resolved very quickly. Small silly issues I had during signup, not with the account at all.

Browsing, streaming, gaming is never shaped on Afrihost.

Afrihost is pretty much the only ISP worthy of consideration. I have tried all the major ones, and they suck compared.

As I thought.... So Openweb is useless during the day... what a joke.
Suspicions confirmed.

What type of account? What are you trying to do? Have you contacted their support?

If you are okay with crap connection most days during office hours and bouncing countless emails back and forth, then I suppose it is worth it.
My emails always started "Hey guys, here is my regular 'what is wrong' email. Connection is dodgy again... blah blah". Got tired of doing this 2 to 3 times a week.

As mentioned previously many times, not everybody has the same experience as you. My internet is perfectly usable at the moment, downloads are shaped but I can browse, stream, etc with no issues.

Does it matter?
I phoned at 11 they havent retuned my call. MWEB treated me better....

Yes it does matter. If you are trying to download torrents or http download on a budget uncapped account during peak office hours you are going to have problems.

So the gamers king accounts are "budget" Hmmm.. I saw cheaper accounts than those...
Oh well.. school fees.
As for downloading torrents... lol... some people think I am really stupid... I am actually trying to access GMAIL... that is ALL I AM TRYING TO DO!

Gamersking is a cheap account. Not really suited for business hours.

If you need business hours get GOLD.

My GOLD is perfect during the day. Streaming twitch as I type this and do other things.

That's all I wanted to know, I can't read minds. Give MrBeep a pm if nobody is getting back to you. I find their email support pretty quick although I rarely need support.

NOTE: I am not on a premium account. Just adding this as info for the readers.

I have a 2mb home uncapped account with Mweb, and am currently throttled (the 31 day period states that I have used under 100gb - like roughly 80gb)

So not quite sure how true your statement is...
