This problem follows me around. Last 3 systems have had it. Windows 7 and now 8 and 8.1. Completely different desktop systems. Yet the same thing always happens, the machine will go to sleep when idle and at least a couple times a week the damn thing will not wake from sleep. With my old setup there was a sleep button on the keyboard which I could press twice to get it awake. Now I don't have that key although perhaps with some instruction I could assign it, but I really want to know what is causing this.

It happened to me 3 times on Sunday (which is actually rare, normally it only does it that often in a week) and each time I had to hit the reboot button. Not ideal.

I'm not sure if it's the monitor that won't wake or the system itself. I suppose I could change the settings so it's always on but always trying to save electricity where I can.

PCs that idle dont consume much electricity maybe 80-150Watts, plus each time the hard drive spins up and spins down it reduces its life span. Enable the Power Saver option in the Power options but disable the option to put the computer to sleep and disable turning off the hard disks.

Tried turning off drives spinning down on the last machine to no effect but will give those suggestions a go and see what happens.

Yup, didn't work. I believe it's the monitor not waking as I inserted a USB and could here the windows sound asking me what I want to do with it.

Press the power button on the pc and it should wake

Unfortunately not.

With my last PC using windows 7 I had the same problem. My only work around was on that keyboard I had a sleep button. When moving the mouse and pressing keys, the monitor wouldn't wake but it would clearly come out of sleep. So I'd press the sleep button to go into sleep and the press it again to come out, and the second press would wake the monitor.

But with my new PC I don't have a dedicated sleep button. Can I create one with the macro keys? Have never done it before.

...and here I thought it was something to do with health issues :erm: :D

Rather use hibernate. Doesn't use electricity so it's cheaper. Doesn't take much longer to start than using sleep.
