Cape Independence!

Will black people be allowed to get an education and will they be "equal" to white people in this "cape independence country"? Or will their role be only to be gardeners, domestic workers, miners (not sure if there are mines in the western cape) and call white people "master", "baas", etc?

Should they rather fore go an employment opportunity (who more often than not, also provide accommodation) and stand at a traffic light and beg?

How much money does the Western Cape get from national government?

If such an independent colony had to exist, it would have to be fully self-sustainable, which I doubt it is.

The Cape doesn't get nearly enough money from National Government. I'm sure this has been been punishment for not allowing the ANC to rule the Province, unfettered.

It could easily become fully self sustainable by declaring itself an International duty free zone and a tax haven. It has everything a country could wish for already in place.

Talking about Oranje

That place is doing pretty damn good for itself. I went there a few months back on my way to visit a friend on his sheep farm in the Karoo. Slept over at Oranje in a guest house there. I love the people there, they are so friendly and warm.

They do everything themselves, EVERYTHING

looks like they want to create a sort of monoco....

The western Cape has some of the riches residents in the country and some of the most expensive land prices..

Why don't you read the link? From the group's own statement:

"A cosmopolitan society where ALL belong truly"

Well check what I read from the group, they were talking about economic independence and about pegging the currency for short-term economic stabilization and check what this guy said:

"However the Western Cape is lucky. We have the sea :) Thus we can have an independent trade from South Africa, meaning we can trade directly with the US and EU without having to deal with South Africa. In which case pegging with the Rand wouldn't be too clever. It seems the EU is our biggest trading partner, due to wine, etc. Thus it would be better to peg to the Euro. Our GDP, which is ~$41.25 billion, and GDP/capita, which is ~$8525, is not that bad compared South Africa which only has a GDP/capita of $5,915. Thus we might not be richer, but we're wealthier. And the last time, I heard the province had a growth rate of 6%. On top of that we have an increasing middle and upper class, thus increasing our income tax base. In the end, my conclusion would be to peg the Cape Rand to the Euro at a rate of 7-8 cape rands to 1 euro. If we keep our work force and population stable, increase education, decrease crime and implement the right business incentives, I don't see why the economy wouldn't flourish. The key is to stabilize the economy."

Just shows you that economically it is viable. We don't need the rest of the SA to be self-reliant. It's actually SA's centralist polices which prohibits the Western Cape from flourishing.

No bru. Read the group. There actually a few black members as well. It has nothing to do with race. Everyone will have equal opportunity in a open and fair society. It's to change the governance, cuz Capetonians are sick of being treated second-class and unwelcome in the rest of SA. Do you actually think we like being called an non-African city and province with a different breed of South Africans, only becuase our province is majority coloured and minority black? Cape Town and Western Cape has more potential than any other city is SA and we just as African as you are and the Kenyans and Nigerians. Stop putting us down and restricting our abilities and maybe our reaction would be different...

cousins' an economist, said the same thing while back

would it be a europe like ID perhaps, where you can easily cross through euro tunnel everyday provided you have the correct passport?

Well if it's only an autonomous state there won't be any border control. Unless if WC and SA come to some sort of agreement.

If it will become independent, yes there will be a border control with passport regulation. It's not certain yet how it will be implemented, however the resources are available. Also the geography in the east will be in our favour in border control cuz of topographical obstacles. However in the north, it will be more difficult.

how do hong kong and singapore protect and border themselves so well?

Well first they have a way much smaller border and second they had British assistance since they were both British protectorates. Honk Kong doesn't have a border any more.

We will first receive assistance from SA on the other side (if they're competent enough lol) and second maybe receive assistance from other countries who have experience, etc.

who would want to help us? USA? EU? China?

perhaps we could arrange an agreement, but any vague idea, just as a start or an example to if this is possible

i'e got no idea how these things work, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City-state

What do we have that others which we could trust, want?

What would you like to know specifically?

Well with regards to the border, many countries would want to help us. EU and the US are big trading partners, so I guess in both our interests to have a stable border. I also know that the two newest countries, Kosovo and Montenegro, are being assisted by the EU and the UN to manage borders, among other things. Now I'm not saying our border control would be full-proof, cuz no country has a full proof border, but we can try our best.

We can set up a special border enforcement unit, who can receive on site training from specialists around the world. We will have to set up deportation facilities and regulations. It won't be easy, but it will be do-able. But hey, if South Africans from other parts of the country believe in our cause, I say let them join. The movement is not anti-South African, it's more anti-north governance. The only thing I'm worried about is mass migration (especially of unemployed, non-skilled people), which would put strain on our economy. The GDP/capita as the population is now is great for a new middle-class country, but on the edge I'm afraid of falling into a lower-class country if it's strained too much.

Btw the Western Cape wouldn't be a city-state, since the WC is the size of England and has many other towns in it.
