A Cape Town cyclist died when he swerved to avoid traffic and fell under a bus while on his way to work, The Cape Times reported.

The bus driver was unaware of any cyclist while driving in Durbanville on Tuesday morning, Golden Arrow Bus Service spokeswoman Bronwen Dyke told the newspaper.

"According to the bus driver, she pulled away and heard a loud bang. She stopped and got out of the bus to find the cyclist under the bus," she was quoted as saying.

Dyke said preliminary investigations showed the cyclist had swerved out to avoid other vehicles and had landed beneath the bus.

The driver had reportedly been suspended until the investigation was complete.

Lt-Col Andre Traut told The Cape Times a case of culpable homicide had been opened, but that the bus driver had not been charged. He did not release the name of the 31-year-old cyclist, at the request of the family.

Driver's are always suspended with accident investigations, SOP with GA.

Shame man - tragic for the family and the poor driver that must be reeling.

Hope a more detailed report will be out in the future to get a grip of the situation.

RIP Cycler dude.

Bad week for cyclists

The cyclist – identified as Rob Burton, 60 – was on a training ride with a friend when the accident happened at around 9am.

The driver of the truck, Michael Nkolisa, told the Daily Dispatch that he did not know how the accident happened as he was driving “correctly”.

“I was on my way from the [East London] IDZ and I think he [Burton] panicked when he heard the sound of the truck and somehow he got hit by the light.

“When I attended to him he was still breathing.”

By the time an ambulance arrived at the scene Burton was dead. He was severely injured on his head and his legs and arms were also broken.

“I have never been involved in such an accident before, I won’t be able to drive after this,” a distraught Nkolisa said.

Cape Town - The hit-and-run driver who allegedly killed Cape Town cycling champ Dr Koos Roux 10 days ago has been arrested.

Roux was killed in a hit-and-run on Bottelary Road in Brackenfell on May 12, while on an early-morning ride with his son, Kobus, a student at Stellenbosch University.

Police this morning said a 51-year-old Brackenfell man had turned himself in to police shortly before 10am - after police had tracked him down.

“He was on the run, lying low, but the detective work continued,” police spokes-man Andre Traut said.

“The vehicle involved in the incident, a VW Polo Classic, was confiscated and will be examined. The circumstances surrounding the matter are still under investigation.”The suspect will appear in court once he has been charged, Traut said.

Roux’s son said at the time: “We were hit from behind. I was in the air… then on the ground. I got up and looked at my dad, he was not moving.” They had been riding within the yellow line.

Roux senior was well-known in cycling circles and sources told the Cape Argus on Wednesday that a number of people had, in the past 10 days, ensured that various leads were passed on to police investigators.

Roux was a national cycling champion - having won a gold in his age-group at the SA national track champs in 2011.

* The identity of the 31-year-old cyclist killed in Durbanville on Tuesday, in a collision involving a Golden Arrow Bus, was being withheld until his next-of-kin had been located, police said this on Tuesday morning.

Hoenstly I think cyclists are dumb to ride on a big road like the M5. Not sure if it classified as a highway but if it is, then cycling on the M5 is illegal. Anyway, just generally is sad that cyclists are getting knocked over so often. I stopped riding a long time ago.

New lead in Cape Town hit and run case

A woman has helped lead the police to the driver who allegedly killed Cape Town cyclist Koos Roux in a hit-and-run, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.

Roux, 59, a former national cycling champion, was reportedly killed in Bottelary Road on May 12, while riding with his son.

Lt-Col Andre Traut told the newspaper a 51-year-old man handed himself over on Wednesday. His vehicle was confiscated, and would be examined.

The Cape Argus reported that one of the women who helped find him was Mickey de Beer, a close friend of Roux's widow.

De Beer told the newspaper her friend's niece heard about the accident on Facebook and reported seeing a smashed car being brought into her complex around the same time.

She reportedly struggled to get police to the complex and when they did they said: "No, it was not a bakkie".

However, she persisted and police returned to tow away the car, which prompted the driver to hand himself in, the newspaper reported.

Are we talking "Transport" kind of cyclist or "The road is my personal gym" kind of cyclist?

I have all the time for the transport kind. None at all for the "personal gym" kind.

Honestly, if you cant get what to need from the fsking killometers of cycle track all over the city then go to the damn gym.
