Cape Town for the 1st Time

So i'm going to SlaapStad for the first time, dont know what to expect but sooo excited :-) Any suggestions on things to do, places to see etc, all affordable preferably :)
 
Tip No. 1: Don't call it Slaapstad when you're here ;)

Tip No 2: That big looming thing is a mountain :p

Seriously, though - two major attractions if you're into nature and stuff is Kirstenbosh Botanical Gardens; and Boulder's Beach (where the penguins live).
 
If you're here around full moon get some mates to do the Lions head walk with you.

Avoid the V&A.

Visit the beaches, Llandudno on a sunny Sunday really cannot be beat - plan to stay for sunset.

If you like wine - visit the winelands.
 
canal walk, viglietti house, aston martin garage, investment cars and lambo cape town :) all very cool places to go. if you're not into cars, go to camps bay, it velly velly nice:)

Will definitely check out Camps Bay, goes without saying, but you say i should give the V&A a Miss? what about Robben Island? or is that over-rated, i do do do wanna enjoy a good sunset :-)
 
Book ahead (call now) for Robben Island. Every time I go, no matter what time of the year, they claim to have sold out. They usually have tickets if you check about 5 minutes before launch, but better safe than sorry.

Cram in every touristy thing you possibly can.
 
sun sets seen from camps bay or even blouberg are really nice! nah, ya can go to the V&A, its not unusual, its like any other shopping centre but than next to a harbour. how about muizenberg and shark cage diving ? there is so much you can do in cape town :)

A drive (with many stops, of course :)) over Chapman's Peak, followed by a late lunch from Hout Bay on the harbour (not Mariner's Wharf - although they're pretty decent but have become a bit pricey; there's a dodgy looking little place just behind it that actually makes better food at cheaper prices), topped off with a drive along to Camps Bay beach where you grab an ice cream and just sit and relax and watchthe sun set...

That's the part I miss most about my brief stay in CT. And I lived on the other side of Chapman's Peak, so it was great to do this every weekend.

Ms/Mrs (I forget) Blunomore has clearly not visited Cape Town in a long time. I wouldn't touch Mitchells Plain with a 10 foot pole since it has become a gangster's paradise and you're most likely to be stabbed by some tik addict.

Long Street is fine, although not amazing. Don't venture out to Long Street at night as it's quite dodgy. I don't particularly like Long Street at day either, it just seems quite down-trodden, even with the renovated buildings.

A few other suggestions:

Kirstenbosch
Ice-skating (at Grand West)
Mariner's Wharf (don't listen to what Avatar says, the food is superb :p)
Robben Island
Wine Route
 
Drive to Cape point on route visit Houtbay and the likes. Also go visit the castle, but go early in the morning, before 09:00. O and be in the City at around 12:00 the canon on Leeukop goes off at 12:00

Also avoid Gdiza at all costs :o

I listed Mitchell's Plain more for my own reasons that anything else. I have an (academic) interest in serial killers and Mitchell's Plain became associated with the Station Strangler in the 1990s.

So at least you and I agree that the focus there is - sadly - on crime.
 
Peninsula day: (You will need a full day for this!)

Drive via camps bay to houtbay - take the seal island cruise
Drive to Cape Point (where the 2 oceans meet) and walk up to the lighthouse on top.
Drive to Simons Town (Boulders Beach Penguins)
Lunch at Two Oceans Restaurant - good food!

Cape Town City tour:

Visit the cape malay quarters, visit table mountain, lunch at camps bay - summerville or bayside cafe

Afternoon go to the waterfront and explore, and then Robben Island

Winelands:

Drive to Stellenbosch - visit Spier, and some wine estates. Drive to Franschhoek, wine estates, Boschendal's Picnics are very good, and so is the wine.

Id stay away from townships, unless you have a qualified guide, that has passenger liability.

Other than that, you can go to Greenmarket Square, Blouberg, botanical gardens, llundadno etc.

Really alot to do, just plan each day - so you dont drive up and down to much :)

If you like whiskey, pop in at the Cape Grace hotel. They have the biggest collection of the stuff in the southern hemisphere.
Ask them for a shot of their 50-year old single malt Glenfiddich, it's not expensive. But be sure to buy all your mates a round as well.
You can admire the nice boats while you get plastered in the mellow sunset.
