Cape Town gets interdict against Winelands e-toll

I cannot understand why SANRAL wanted to withheld documents from the City knowing full well that per the Access to Information Act they will have no feet to stand on. If you believe in what you are doing based on studies that were done why not hand the studies over? Why drag this thing through an expensive legal process like this over access to information? Unless, of course, you have something to hide. What other explanation makes sense? I cannot help getting the impression that the legally required documentation ... ie properly signed documents (by all the correct parties) ... are non-existant.
 
And since when do you first appoint a contractor and then let the contractor tell you what the project will cost? Is this some banana republic? I could not believe my ears when I heard SANRAL's legal team defend this procedure as acceptable. In what universe do they operate? Guptaverse?
 
The residents of Cape Town got screwed with the Chapman's Peak toll-road concession (when the ANC was in charge of the Western Cape Province). We have also learned from the Gauteng toll-road protests and legal cases. The current City Council and Provincial Goverment (both DA) will never allow that kind of mistake to happen again...
 
Could you please show us a map of the proposed area to be tolled and what are the actual upgrades to the roads planned?
 
Yah so with eTrolling active in Gauteng they are now pushing for Cape Town.

i.e.

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town is expected to return to the Western Cape High Court on Thursday to resolve an ongoing dispute over the proposed N1/N2 Winelands Toll Highway Project.

On Wednesday, Transport mayoral committee member Brett Herron said it would approach Deputy Judge President Jeanette Traverso for a procedural directive.

The directive was about the SA National Roads Agency Limited's (Sanral) alleged refusal to hand over documents which formed part of its decision-making process in the project despite a court order compelling it do so.

In May, the high court granted the city an interim interdict preventing Sanral from implementing or advancing the toll project, including the conclusion of any contract or commencement of construction.

The interim relief was granted pending the court's review of Sanral's decision to implement the toll project. The review date has yet to be determined.

Herron said Sanral had failed to hand over important documents about the proposed project.

The proposed concession route along the N1 extends from west of the R300 interchange through to Sandhills. The N2 portion of the proposed toll road concession extends from west of the R300 to Bot River.

About 180km of highway in the province will be tolled should the project go ahead.

This pretty much includes anyone traveling to the Cape Town (from the North) as the N1 and N2 are the two main routes into the Cape.

Because SANRAL feel their actions are above the law, and are managed by a bunch of arrogant control freaks who insist beyond reasonable reason that their way is the only way.

And I guess that will just be the start before they do the inner city routes i.e. M5 etc...
 
Yeah so basically the only way to bypass if you coming from the North via the N2 is to take a huge detour via Kleinmond / Betty's Bay.
Via the N1 you screwed.

They are still going to get you before the R300. You will have to go through Gordon's Bay, Somerset West and then with the old road through to Bellville etc... Going to take you at least an additional 2 or so hours.

You can also cut through to Villiersdorp from Botriver and then on to Franshoek and through to Stellenbosh and Bellville but this will also take you at least another additional hour to two.

That is true. My bad.

At least I can still get to Stellenbosch (via Fisantekraal) and Paarl (via R312) avoiding them.

Hermanus might be a challenge :D

Why would you wana toll the R300. that is a death road and a freakin k@k road to drive on. i will only go on there if i have to.

going to Hermanus is a bit of a challenge.
 
Forgive my ignorance here, but are those routes jam-packed with very heavy traffic on a daily basis?

Yup but if you are coming from cpt in the AM and then going back to cpt in the PM you will be fine, other way round you a bit stuffed.
