Cape Town may seize driver cellphones

More road side legislation... well 'tis the season of the stupid-thoughtless-official/politician
 
They should do it up here too... I see many an idiot doing stupid things on the road, all while on the phone.
 
wtf are the cops gonna do with cellphones? Taking private property and never being able to claim it back because the corrupt lines of employees will grab and either give it to their families or sell it?

Prosecute, hand out fines, but leave the citizens fscking private property!!! :mad:
 
Thanks Cape Town for making another stupid law.

Just raise the fines, idiots.

Guess who will be paying for these cellphones....insurance companies ie YOU

Moer it stukkend with a 10 pound hammer conveniently placed under the cop's seat.
 
Maybe I should elaborate on my post.... they should actually do something (specifically harsh fines) about this.
 
I hardly ever see traffic police in Cape Town so good luck with that. The use of phones and sms-ing while driving is rampant here.
 
If folks can afford a R2 000 - R10 000 cellphone then they can afford either a car-kit or a hands-free kit.

No sympathy from me.

But I'm not very keen on the idea of officials grabbing your private property though. What if they just throw out your sim and all your personal info is still on the phone. The ramifications mount up. Or rather the likelihood of abuse mounts up.

I'm more concerned that 'little laws' like these, escalate to more of our personal freedoms being impeded upon with other 'little laws'.

I do agree with you regarding invasion of privacy. What guarantee will the person have that his phone will not be accessed by another party? NONE.

Well if it bothers you so much, then dont use the phone while driving, its that simple.

It's the ones in the R1m+ car with no hands free that are most annoying. And they're always on the phone - an idiot in an Audi (not R1m+) almost changed lanes into my driver's door because she was changing lanes while on a call.

For you maybe, but I have seen loads of people that forget how to drive while holding the phone.

Things like changing gears and turning at the same time is a pain when you only have one hand free <---- I have seen a lot of people that think they can actually do that with no problems for the other people on the road.

I'm not concerned for myself. Just saying this is another avenue for the exploitation of people's privacy. I understand its meant to be a deterrent. But its got too many loopholes that lends itself to be open to abuse and corruption.
 
Well it seems only after the 3rd offence they will impound the phone. This is an old law, that has not really been enforced. Just don't use phone and drive (like don't drink and drive) and you will have no problems. Next they should enforce use of seatbelts, really makes no sense to allow little kids to sit on passengers lap with out any form of restraint. What all this has to do with infringing on our personal freedoms is not clear.
 
Happy that they are going to pass a law.

Been nearly taken out more than enough by morons who is concentrating harder on they conversation than where they are going.
