Cape Town Traffic and housing

Good day everyone,
I would appreciate your advice please. I am moving to Cape Town in July and will be working in CBD. I am unsure about where the best place would be for me to stay. Rental seems very expensive for a neat 2 bedroom apartment close to CBD and surroundings(Gardens, Sea Point, etc) and I am also concerned about crime within the CBD at night. I prefer the suburban living vibe and saw nice apartments in Burgundy Estate (20kms away from CBD) which are really modern and affordable. I would eventually like to buy an apartment there within like 6 -12months due to to it being affordable and modern and new developments(no transfer costs etc) but I hear mixed reviews about the traffic to and from CBD from Burgundy Estate. Is this a good area? Is it feasable for me to live there and work in CBD? Does any one work in CBD and travel from Burgundy Estate? If so, What is the traffic like and best routes and times to travel? Alternatively, what other areas would you suggest to rent and eventually buy? I would really appreciate advise! There is a huge difference between something being expensive and something costing a lot of money.

after figuring out how to get to the CBD, I hope you have a parking as well

It will take 40 min to hour depending on what time you leave.

Burgundy Estate charges around 3 times the normal electricity rate, you are force to buy electricity from some sub meter company which is making a killing overcharging people. So keep that in mind.

Look at tableview or milnerton, the myciti bus route will take you to town easily. Stay away from parklands, the pricing might be temping but the area is a dump.
 
What many people seem to do is to just look at the distance. You can't do that if you are comparing it with other cities.

Rather look at travel time.

Google maps allows you to set a start or end time for a trip. Use that to get a better sense of the travel time you will experience from your chosen location.
 
Skip Burgundy

Skip Burgundy and instead try to buy in Bothasig or Edgemead. Prices in Bothasig I see is growing 15% year on year as people are knocking down the old cheaply prefabs and building fancy houses. It's also central to town and everywhere else and easy onto the n7 and n1. But be prepared to buy quick. Most of the more smaller townhouses style barely stay 3 days on the market there. So they are in high demand.

If you rather like a flat go for kenilworth.

I would avoid table view due to the smell of the refinery.

Thank you! I didnt even consider parking at my office. Will find out from my work!

Thanks. I am from PE and have been using the Maps from here in the morning to get an estimate of how the traffic will be from different areas, but wasnt sure how accurate it is as it sometimes says it will take beweem 2-4 hours to get to CBD!

Great advise thanks! Will have a look at those areas!
 
If possible, rent as close as possible to work ... walking distance if possible.
Then look at renting/buying a place in a nicer area once you know hte area's better.

Always fun to take a drive thru some areas on a sunday.

what about monte vista, goodwood or parow areas, most of the traffic is around the n1 though

well traffic around CPT is gone very bad

Thanks! I will have a look at those areas too. Yeah-not looking forward to all the traffic!
 
For around 10k you can rent a 2 bed apartment in Royal Ascot in Milnerton, roughly about 12 kms from the city. MyCiti bus stop is within walking distance. Or if you drive, you can leave around 7 and be in town before 8 most days.
