Cape wants more bandwidth for less

Disgusting - we're talking about libraries here.

When it comes to money and Telkom's commitment to South Africa, their mission is quite clear.
Take as much as you can, from as many as you can, as fast as you can.

Maybe if the State was forced to foot these bills (for libraries and educational institutions) they would wake the hell up and start kicking some Telkom ass (just not the 38% bit that they own)
Rofl, the DoC with one hand pointing fingers at high telecoms costs in SA while with the other hand outstreched they collect bucket loads of cash.
puke

Seems like Telkom don't care who they rip off. Not really much of a surprise, seeing that they've been doing it forever. Looks like we are doomed for slow internet for the rest of etternity in this country.

If Telkom were at least giving the libraries some decent connections, then that price would be justifiable. Seriously 64Kb for R1500. They couyld at least give a library 256Kb. It is after all quite a few people browsing from one spot on a slow connection.

Really diabolical of telkom - great initiative from city of Cape Town - nicely driven into the ground by Telkom

I tried using it once and it was as slow as molasses .... only a 64K link per library ... gee no wonder :).

Oh your also in CPT Tibby. Ive also used it and its really slow, but that must be a diginet line, so it should have amazing ping and network access times.

So why on earth would they buy diginet links? WHy not just get each library a 1mb ADSL line, that is alot cheaper and youd only need about 5 gigs for 4 computers that only browse.

The problem with getting adsl for the libraries are that, if people find out that the lines are fast, everyone and their granny will go to the library to download. Then the cap won't last quite as long as that. So they will have to implement some sort blocking to prevent downloading.

I think they should get 384 adsl for each library and have a few shared 30gb accounts. This way if one runs out they use another account. this would work out alot cheaper and faster for the library. 1mb line is bit overkill for a free library access to 4 computers.

Okay ... so now who exactly can bid for this without a license ?
OW .. the governmint bit me on the ass again ... OW
the RFI and tender documentation is quite open to different models so it is open to quite a number of operators and not just the usual suspects...will be very interesting and i suggest you watch this space

Download to where ... no USB and no burners ???.
Most people use it for webmail I noticed.

No usb? Not even at the back?

I guess then its not a problem. Except if if someone goes there with a hundred stiffies :p

Lol, they must have a guy they deal with within the council who makes sure that the city keeps going for these expensive options. Wtf? talk about chucking cash away. If we wern't paying for it, it might be funny.
