You are under the impression that rats has no meaning in the ecosystem. Once you eradicate the rats, then you have a mice problem, this is only one example. Once you remove the mice... Do a read up on the ecosystems, especially on invasive species.

"In addition to catching rats, the cages are used to [fill in the pertinent information here]. Also, once the rats are eliminated, research shows that [insert next level pest here] take over. This exacerbates the problem since [insert next level pest here] has been show to [insert negative consequence here], which is even worse than the effect of the rats."
