Capitec starts Sunday banking

I dont use Windows on my laptop....so how can I do online banking if I use Ubuntu? Can I tell them to not activate my online banking with the security token? Do you know? Maybe I must pop in over the weekend to their branch and ask these things before I do this.

I have no issues with their online banking, using Ubuntu and Firefox. Needs the random number generated from the security token/dongle to complete login, and for a few other things like adding/paying beneficiaries. Had no issue with it and have been using it for over two years now.

Finally. More stores in SA/Africa in general need longer hours. We need 24/7 hour places. Why do we work with the EURO-type mentality where we have to stop doing EVERYTHING by 7pm?

Stupid. Extend the hours, give people more jobs. Wonder why America is #1, they work all-day.

yeah capitec has been doing good so far,but fnb is leading in banking innovations so far

How does the token work? Is it not like the Nedbank business banking tokens our company uses where you need to plug it into your laptop and windoze needs to recognize it?

Nothing needs to be plugged in, you just press a button and enter the number indicated/generated. The serial no. of the dongle is linked to your internet banking profile, and would suggest that the number-generation algorithm is unique to each one, so I guess that is how you cannot use another dongle on your account. Never tested this though.

america also doesn't have people blowing up atms. security is a big issue imo, and operating at night on skeleton staff is risky.

Debit card swipes are free. Monthly fee is R4.50. Debit orders are R2.50 each, flat rate. Cash withdrawal is free at Pick and Pay and R7.00 flat rate at any ATM. Internet banking is also free except for a once off R125.00 for the security token. However, R2.70 is charged for each payment to a beneficiary.

The monthly interest is normally more than the monthly charges...meaning I bank for mahala.

Downside...you can't withdraw cash from tellers --- only ATMs
They don't have any other retail products like credit card, asset finance, etc. only the savings account and personal loans
Oh I forgot, they charge for the SMS notifications. I think it's 40c

they no longer charge this fee
only charge for a replacement :)

Yip. Internet banking is free. The token is free. Everything is fkn free and you earn interest, and you can swipe your card free at any place, and their service at their branches are amazing and thorough, EFT payments clear within the day, and, and, and... There is NO reason whatsoever to still be with ABSA, FNB, Standard Bank or Nedbank. Their models are old, their rates are insane, they give s#itty service. Capitec ftw. Will never look back. They will be huge some day thanks to their modern banking model.

FNB tried to shame me into opening an account with them by dismissing Capitec as just a small bank for the low income earners. But when I asked the sales guy about the better deal that FNB has to offer me as a higher income earner other than the shiny platinum card with exorbitant fees, he couldn't tell me and I duly walked out.

Now that's service. I would love the other banks to follow, without raising charges like they do for everything.

I'm going to move to Capitec once I've paid off and closed my Visa Credit Card at Standard Bank.
I added up all the bank charges and fees on my Standard Bank E-Plan and it comes to just over R110 per month.
For exactly the same transactions and account fees on a Capitec account the charges come to R40.50 per month.
With an interest rate of 6% on a balance of R0-R10000 it means that the interest will cover the fees if I have R8000 or more in the account.
I'm also impressed with the longer banking hours (5pm weekdays) and the use of OTP tokens.
A big thumbs up to Capitec and their transparency.

Do you have a link for this? I'm only waiting for them to issue credit cards before moving.

Unfortunately not. Read it in a newspaper a few months ago. Why don't you call them and ask if they can give you a more exact timeframe?

A bit OT: I would be interested to know who owns Capitec.

Classic case of sour grapes :) There are SO many people of average and even higher income brackets who moved over to Capitec recently.

They are publicly traded.

Capitec BankType Public (JSE: CPI)

So far I am very happy with them. The guy that helped me to open my account told me that they are looking at launching credit cards later this year. Could not give a exact time frame though.

See my earlier post in this regard.
