Ok now i'm really confused.. I've been away since friday... Nobody at home, I get home today and other than the 400 disconnects over the last few days I cant download anything, not even my mail.

I check my cap and i'm way over... How the hell????

Someones got your account details.

That's the problem with ADSL accounts - I'd say first bet would be to check with family then friends but it's more than likely someone working at Telkom.

Well I'm the only one who knows the account details.. other than telkom and my adsl router of course. Even my Fiance doesn't know what the passwords are.

She was with me the whole time I was away so no chance it being family as i'm the only one who has ADSL in my family and nobody else was at my house.. Unless of course we have a new type of crime where people break into your house, bypass your alarm system and use you PC while your out. Or my cat has been downloading feline porn while I'm out. I got an email from telkom on monday with my usage stats as i've requested it to be sent every monday, and it was perfect... Now suddenly it says I downloaded 1.7 gigs and uploaded 1.0 gig on sunday??? When I was at an event where I have photo's to prove I was there the whole weekend..

Telkom has said they can check if there have been multiple logins with my account details and trace the ports at the DSLAM used for connection, hopefully meaning they will find out who logged in using my account details if it was hacked... BUT bottom line though is I'm screwed for the month right?

Well Telkom could technically reset your cap I think - so don't give up yet!
They could but they wont!!! Just got a call and it has been proved that somebody else logged in using my account details on a different DSLAM port. However.... I have to now go to the police station with details telkom will be emailing to me, and lay a charge against Telkom and the person. This will then cause Telkom to release to me the details of the person who hacked into my account, and allow legal action to take place. Sorry for who ever did it though because I am not going to let this drop until their ass is burnt!

Your computer was on....

Maybe your p2p network was on and the uploads was going strong to users :) .Maybe you thought your computer was off.It hapened to me about 2 months ago.F^&* the p2p networkwhen you not watching your pc.

Was your modem on the whole time and how securely was it locked down (which model and was your remote webadmin turned off) ???.

Didnt you two read his last post? He clearly says that someone else was using his account.

Kalvaer, GREAT STUFF!! I support you all the way.

One of the Bloodhound Gang song pops into my head:
WE DON'T NEED NO WATER LET THE MOTHER****ER BURN
BURN MOTHER****ER BURN

ROFL!

Okay, but seriously now. Are you sure you don't have your account info in a txt file? And could that txt file possibly be shared in certain programs such as DC++? I know it sounds really stupid... but its happened before, lol.

Anyways, goodluck with the legal stuffs, hope you find him.

Well nobody at all knows my account data other than me.. I dont even know my account data for that matter is its stored on my router and on a piece of paper somwhere in this mess I call a study. My router has a built in firewall and sits behind a hardware firewall.

I hate p2p progs (no offence to anyone who uses them out there) so nothing like that is installed on my PC and the virus progs and antispyware progs run every day

What makes you think I'm a network admin at work :)

So who ever it was, was pretty good, or works for Telkom, or is a stupid newb who got lucky with access diver. At least Telkom is clever enough to track DSLAM ports.

Now to wait for the police to get me the subpeona... Took me for ever to try and explain to the officer at the charge office last night that the scene of the crime was on the internet and I didn't have the peeps physical address and that is why I needed to subpeona Telkom...

Well, I'll say "nah nah nah nah told you so" just to get it out the way :)

It's a worrying story however - as you say, you've not let anyone have access to your details, so it's more than likely an inside job.

I guess it's a totally random thing in terms of what username and password are used - they can pick anyone out of 50000 users.

It could happen to any ADSL user anytime - surely an extra level of security could be added whereby your ADSL modem reports your landline number associated with your account along with the username and password - all three have to match.

It has happened to somebody else I know last month, and I believe they are with Tiscali. Somebody capped both of their 3 gig accounts they use to FTP data to their servers in the UK and are still waiting for the police :(

Do you honestly think our wonderful SAPS give a damn? I mean surely you are quite upset and feel rather violated but does this rate highly as a crime requiring the hours of our wonderful police service in their opinion.

As good as an idea as it may seem it could cause other problems. What if I want to let one of my friends log in with my details as his has capped, or what if a mate of mine and I go halvies on a login? just a thought...

Well so far it doesn't seem like it. I cant seem to find out who is working on my case or even if it has been taken up further.. :(

let me tell you what is a crime, I recently ordered some stuff from the US, all of it being computer hardware. The customs officer then had the cheek to try and bill me for import duties plus tax. After I tell him over and over, hardware is import duties free, he then agreed that Im right and only charged me the 14% tax.

They try and make easy money on the misinformed everywhere, even at customs. If I didnt tell them, I WONT pay duties on the hardware, they would have made an extra R2000 just to put in whoevers pocket.

So moral of this story, when you order hardware from anywhere, make sure they dont try and slap on 10% and then another 14% on that total.
