I wonder how we would react if we bought a soft drink and then we are given a time limit in which to drink it. If we do not finish it within the time limit, it is taken away and you have to buy a fresh drink?

Now, I buy 100GB capped service from my ISP, Axxess DSL and If I do not use it all during the course of the month, I lose what ever is left at the end of the month. If I exceed the allowed capacity, I must dock up immediately or the service is no longer available!

Why can I not carry forward something I bought? I paid for it! Why is this different from any other item that I may purchase and use at my leisure.

Comments please.

I guess it will make planning for their IPC / Int. bandwidth requirements pretty difficult if they do allow this ?

Nope just set a limit on the carry over. At the current state network is burdened at the end of the month as everyone tries to use all their data.

Hi BillBee,

Unfortunately that is the policy on our Capped accounts, we suggest that you monitor your usage and downgrade your Capped account accordingly or you can consider moving onto Prepaid data. You can find more info on our Prepaid accounts here https://www.axxess.co.za/prepaid-adsl.

Is there no way to get slightly higer priced capped accounts that rollover? You just set the amount that can be rolled over as twice the package size.

So if a person has a 10GB account, they can't use more than 20GBs in one month.

Dear Axxess Lady. Using the old evergreen "it is our policy" response and that explains and rationalises everything does it? How about changing the policy to fall in line with your Mobile policy? Or do you have a "policy" that explains that as well?

Don't know if they still do but Cybersmart offered capped subscribers a rollover service (Capsaver) for about R25 a month where unused cap gets carried over to the next month.

Don't think I've seen anything similar offered by anyone else!

Something like this is a brilliant idea.

You haven't clearly stated what you are complaining about. Either you are constantly hitting your cap and being cut off or you are losing data you perceive as being bought. So without analysing your usage like axxesslady has said it is difficult to advise you about the best course of action.

With axxess the calculations are quite easy. Prepaid is R900 for 100Gb (which takes like a year to expire) so that means if axxess is forced to give you 100Gb of data it costs R900. However by offering capped accounts you are collectively buying data. For eg if there are 10 100Gb capped accounts they will collectively have bought a cap of 1Tb. However all users are not the same and although some users may use the full 100Gb some users will not. Because we know 100Gb from axxess costs R900 and 100Gb capped costs R379 we can calculate that collectively all 100Gb accounts only utilises 42% of the 1Tb bought. So all the capped accounts when taken on average uses 42Gb per month. I don't know how true this holds for you but like I said without your usage history it is difficult to make a decision. So in effect by taking a capped account axxess is giving you a 58% discount because they know what the average usage is for 100Gb capped accounts. If axxess is forced to roll over the leftovers from each of the 100Gb accounts you can see where this is going, 100Gb accounts will cost closer to the R900 per month. Hence the oob rate of R7 per Gb.

I am excluding discounts axxess may receive on buying their data in bulk. So lets say axxess gets a 15% discount from Telkom for buying 1Tb of data instead of 100Gb accounts it means they can push the utilization to 57% and still break even. Somewhere between that 42% and the 57% utilization lies axxess's profit margin. But we can only guess at actual utilization.

Now knowing this calculation and then looking at the uncapped price of R495 we can calculate that uncapped utilization needs to be balanced at around 55Gb per month. If you look at the AUP you will see the 20Gb rollover per 10 day period which effectively caps uncapped accounts at the 60Gb limit. Very close to the 55Gb we get from the calculation.

So if you are constantly hitting your cap and being cut off getting uncapped might not be the best option for you. But you can actually buy two 100Gb capped accounts for less that the 100Gb prepaid so effectively having a 200Gb cap for R758, but with no 20Gb rollover limit. If you are constantly utilizing less that 57% of your cap you may be overbuying and then getting a lower capped account could be an option. Just go and do the calculation for the lower capped accounts to understand the utilization.
