Hi All,

I have a query about capped vs uncapped DSL accounts from ISP's.

Are capped accounts also bandwidth-prioritized, example, do capped accounts from ISP's prioritize, say Voip / browsing and email traffic during day-time operating hours? I know that certain ISP's do this with uncapped accounts. I am just not sure if the same thing happens with capped accounts? Can anybody confirm? Also, can anybody tell me what sort of traffic Dota 2 or WoW for example would use? Probably UDP p2p type traffic?

Thanks,

Prawn

nope

capped accounts are usually not shaped because they want you to use up all your data so that you can buy more.

That's not true at all. ISPs don't want you to use all of your data as they price them on breakage models. They also most certainly add priorities to bandwidth profiles for a few reasons: if something goes wrong (an IPC link fails) you can destroy your network with no such management, and also because they sell it cheap, like Webafrica who sell shaped capped data. It's like an uncapped account but the amount of bandwidth you can use is limited by the cap.

ISPs certainly don't want you to use all of your cap and ISPs most certainly add bandwidth priorities to their product profiles.

ISP's would want you to use your data, and buy more if they using a breakage model. The additional data is priced alot higher than your normal cap, so even if they are pricing at a lower or cheaper price point, theoretically speaking, they wouldnt want you to carry over that data. One of the reasons why the ISP's are reluctant to have roll over data, because clients are not forced to buy additional data at a higher rand value per Gig.

As someone who works in the industry, they would much prefer you not use all of your data to retain their breakage pricing models. You buying 5GBs @ R6 is a far cry from the expected margin on a breakage model.

LoL uses udp and I suspect dota2 does as well.
Whether you go with capped or a premium uncapped service, your latency will still suffer if other people are using the net at the same time as you.
Perhaps someone here csn suggest a router with good qos?

Capped broadband is always better than uncapped broadband

The amount of people signed on for uncapped accounts will keep justifying their extra expense to capped subscribers but the truth is that it is actually better to have a capped account than an uncapped account because you never have to worry about being throttled, shaped or any sort of limit to your online experience. All you need to do is to know your highest monthly broadband usage and then sign up for that amount of GB's or more. Capped accounts gives you more control. ;)

Depends on the provider. You can get capped that is shaped, and is fast becoming more and more prevalent. Like Webafrica's capped.
