HI, I need some guidance on this, I have 16gig with Telkom. On Friday I checked my data usage and found that I had only downloaded about 5gig, so by my calculations I should have had about +-11gig available so I started to download Dexter season 6 (6.44gig). Checked this morning and found thew download pending as I had now reached my cap.

Called Telkom and they now say my upload for the month is also 8gig. The woman suggests I turn off the Windows auto update as this is what is using my up my 16gig.

What I am confused about is that with the exception of downloading movies from piratebay from the last 2 months, nothing has changed about my internet usage.

I tried to go back on the data management page on the Telkom site but it does not seem to give me info beyond Dec 2011 so I cant judge if the 8gig upload per month was the norm in the previous months.

I cannto see it being normal as I only incresed from 8gig to 16 gig earlier in Dec 11. Was initially on 2gig per month then was migrated to 5gig then 8gig.

Can any offer any suggestions as to whether Telkom is giving me the whole story

thanks

If you downloading from the piratebay then you will also be uploading as well downloading which could explain why your usage is so high. Did you limit your upload speed in your torrent client?

When you download series (or anything else) you are sharing the files that you are downloading with other downloaders around the world (Peer To Peer = P2P). The sharing is the Upload part.

To prevent this from happening you do not make any changes to your modem or Cap management, but to your downloading software (eg. uTorrent). There is a setting where you can limit the upload rate. The default is "0" meaning it will allow other downloaders to access the files that you are downloading at the maximum rate as determined by your line speed and ISP package.

Just remember, If you limit your upload speed, on certain "Torrents", your
download speed is punished as well. But if you only have a 16GB Cap, I
guess you're not in much of a rush to complete a huge Torrent.

Rather ditch Torrents and go for NZB's instead, because then you won't be uploading as much and you won't get Infringement notices from Internet Solutions.
