Caps: Telkom & Sentech state their cases

The irony is this, what (for the home user) is the point of a high speed internet connection? For gaming, browsing, ssh and rdp 128k is plently. I know because I currently have 128k isdn and all of the above work just peachy, WE ACTUALLY WANT TO DOWNLOAD STUFF. The major reason that I'd get a pacy connection is so that it doesn't take me 12 hours to download a 20 minute episode of whatever show I want to watch. I'm pretty close to the point of getting satellite rather than have someone tell me how much I can download. If you sell me a 512k connection I'm gonna do my damdest to use as much of it as I can. This isn't a problem on ISDN, it isn't a problem in most other nations. Now you might say that I'm a bad person for downloading TV shows and movies, but I'm of the opinion that the market has failed to deliver a service that meets my requirements. If I desire to watch 16 episodes of show x one after the other why is that a bad thing, let alone shows that are not even brought here. I'd pay for them if it was an option but no one has seen fit to deliver a product that meets my needs.

And between Telkom and Sentech they have created this perception that people who download stuff are bad, yes we use bandwidth, what we use it on is none of your business. If someone sold you a satellite service and then said "Well sir, you can only watch for 3 hours a day otherwise you must spend another R300" you'd tell them where to stick their product. HOW CAN YOU SELL A SERVICE AND THEN SAY USING IT IS BAD???

Hmmm I need a nice cold beer.

We all know the cap is BS, Telkom know it as well.
My point is though, its MY 3GIGS. I BOUGHT IT, ITS MINE, AND I SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE IT ANYWAY I PLEASE.
[:(!]

Just to highlight the exhorbitant costs of bandwidth in this country have a look at what local webhosting companies charge you for their packages. Main thing to focus on is the allowed bandwidth per month.
Then compare it with any company overseas.
Its pathetic.

The dude from Hellkom summed it up pretty well on Carte Blanche saying that local companies are forced to use overseas hosts for their sites due to local offers not being commercialy viable.
myadsl.co.za is / or was also hosted overseas for similar reasons.

Its blatant extortion of epic proportions.
The inability of the respective company/s representatives (Telkom) to answer simple direct questions regarding service costs, in a clear and transparent way, justifying the said costs in a credible manner, that is not discounted by simple economics and mathematics the instant the answer is given, equates to GUILTY AS CHARGED.

Spamtheman: I play games, I've had ISDN and now 'upgraded' to ADSL. First of all no way is 128k enough with todays games. Joint Ops you need ADSL, even with BF1942 128k if there were more than a certain number of players, 128k used to lag. With RTS, you cannot have more than 4 players or it starts to lag.

Now, I don't download alot, mostly patches and updates, but I play games and I reach my 3Gig cap within 10-15 days. Games eat bandwidth for breakfast and whats worse is that I'm playing on local servers. Why should we be punished for playing a game locally? The technology is there to split local/international, but Telkom won't use it - why? Because they are too greedy and have no 'need' to use it.

RoosTa I'm more of a CS player so 64k is actually enough, although it looks like I'm being bullied into buying JO. A good example though is last night I listened to the WCG finals while leaving my torrents going capped at 6k/s. I'll agree with games taking loads of bandwidth though, but as long as local is quick that shouldn't be an issue right?

Dont go satelite dude... Sentech owns that shiat...

stay away from sentech... step away from the sentech connection....

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!

Who said I was gonna touch Sentech with a 10 foot barge pole, I use 128k isdn. There is no hole in my forehead.

Hahahahaha... and Telscum must be hole in bank account, economy, profit margin, and the countrys future..

Anyone think Sentech should cap to 64K at 30GB and offer expansion packs after that?

All I want is an at least 128k always on connection with say... a 10 Gig cap. That would pretty much be all I need.

Telkom se ma...

I've been thinking bout changing to 128k isdn from my existing 64k, but it seems like a bit of an expensive option as you're then paying for 2 lines. I only go on offpeak, 7-7am and w/ends.
Does it really make a diff for gaming? Is it worth it? How have you found the costs? If you have infinitecall, do you now pay that twice? Do you pay yet another 90bucks for another line rental?

I've also been thinking bout the 384adsl option, but the cap really puts me off. What to do. hmm.

Telkom - South Africa's Handbrake to progress.

And what about p2p. I currently use dc++ and get about 8kb average, whooohooo!(don't laugh adsl & sentech users).
What does that increase to on 128k?

Well if you have isdn 2a the only additional cost is an extra phonecall and whatever extra your isp charges. As far as a difference for gaming goes, not really in CS but I've heard JO and BF are bandwidth hogs. Download speeds increase to between 14k - 16k/s.

Thanks Spam and Rootsa, being thinking which package to get as I'm using a 56k modem to play FFXI (please don't laugh)almost had ISDN installed but the stopped at the last possible minute. So I cancelled the installation, and decided to wait and see what the outcome will be next year of VOIP. Will it bring change or chaos? Hopefully better options for online gaming...

What RTS? My 128K ISDN connection can easily handle a 30+ player game of Wolf:ET, and I've never had bandwidth problems playing an RTS, even on a 56K analogue modem connection.
