Capturing video from an old DV Sony Cam - need some help please

Right, so I have one of these...

and installed Ulead Video Studio to capture :) Its an old version but it should be OK.

Its a PAL setup, and the source is 640x480.

Im trying to capture the video in its uncompressed format, and then run it through something like AutoGK which will pop it in whatever format I choose. Either Xvid or Divx, whatever really. I just cant have a uncompressed 30GB file. Need something small and lightweight(ish)

Question is, what format do I capture this stuff at?? :confused:
 
Yeah, get Virtualdub. Use the capture feature. Grab in Raw form first. Once in raw AVI, convert. Did that today. A normal PAL video via firewire (I have an old DV camera, but also have a firewire card, which helps). Virtualdub Raw form gives the best sample video, least mess, and you can work from there. My original was 720x576, 37:20, without Audio, as I didn't need it. Came to 7,78GB raw, and 1.12GB when compressed into m4v.
 
The recommended codec is the x264 one if you want a good compression ratio and quality. Try and keep the same video resolution and framerate (eg. 23.97 - 30fps).
 
If that is the identical model camcorder in the picture DCR-HC42E why are you screwing around with analogue capture when you can use the iLink/Firewire interface to transfer the video digitally which has zero loss???

It's the exact camera. I did notice that there was some other digital memory setting but I assumed that was for capturing movie onto instead of capturing onto the tape...

I don't have firewire on my pc I'm afraid, unless I can use usb I guess I'm stuck using that usb capture device and doing the whole thing manually?

edit : downloading manual from Sony site... ;)

Manual quite clearly gives the instructions on how to copy from the tape to the memory stick duo. Im not certain if this camera has a memory stick duo in it though... Will need to take a look when I get home. If it doesnt, then I guess its back to the other method :(
