In a scenario where you have no issues or unexpected worst case expenses then yes, I may end up paying more than you. But if these scenarios do happen then you will be on the losing end.

No, it was not, but someone has a major bee in their bonnet about dealers and making use of them for vehicle purchases and maintenance. Accordingly the thread was degenerated to a point where it began to seem absurd.

Case in point.

He does, and your name very aptly described those generalisation - ad infinitum.

Yes, you were caught out deceiving people, and instead of getting back to me with the wall of text I respectfully asked for, you merely want to point fingers.

I like to root out any middle men charging a premium for 'service and peace of mind' which I can do myself.

It's not may, it's a definite fact.

I have pointed out numerous times that not everybody is a hobbyist mechanic. If I were I would almost gauranteed lean to your way of thinking. For those that are not this is risky. You cannot seem to comprehend this. Unlike you, I do not believe there is a wrong or a right here - simply which is the safer route to take depending on your circumstances.

So in your mind one should not pay for services rendered? I therefore take it you get your milk straight from the cow and do not pay the municipality for water, sewerage and garbage collection as these are middle men tasks that you can do yourself?

But who is a hobbyist mechanic? Who has spoken here about maintaining cars themselves?

Visiting MyBroadband and asking advice for a specialist mechanic to take your brand/car to, is not being a hobbyist mechanic or maintaining a car oneself.

A ridiculous comparison. The level of work required to bypass the municipality for basic services, as well as supermarkets for milk, is not comparable at all to buying a car through a dealership vs privately.

That was a gem, I must say, Roux.

Apologies. I misunderstood your doing it yourself part then?

No problem at all, which 'doing it yourself' are you referring to? Any 'doing it yourselfs' I've mentioned would relate to buying privately and maintaining the car at a specialist/mechanic. Not carrying out the work oneself. Or using a dealer.

Although I would love to learn how, and will. Doing a minor/major service is not difficult, it just requires the right knowledge and tools. Which we have the internet for, or MyBb. :)

After growing up with a father that was constantly working on cars or some or other handyman project in the garage - he was always dirty or injured.... I realised I like office jobs. :p

Why do you need to be a hobbyist mechanic to use a non-dealer?

In fact I would argue that you should be a hobbyist mechanic if you use a dealer because they are the ones more likely to pull the wool over your eyes.

Timing chain failure = R35,000 - but hopefully that does not happen.

That seems to vary quite a bit from one engine to another. I have had 5 years/75,000km on my old 1.6 to 10 years / 150,000 km on my newer 1.8, however some people claim it is best to do it sooner that the recommended interval.

Looking at a slightly dated replacement schedule for Continental products you will also see it varies from one car to the next. http://aam-europe.contitech.de/pages/downloads/docs/Poster-Wechselintervalle-Meilen_en.pdf

I didn't say it was set in stone, just presented the most common ones.

It's something you should only worry about when buying a car. Check its service book and the related intervals.

Okay did you even read what you just wrote? Oh no before you go to hospital you need to know about medicine so they don't rip you off!! Yeah we know we get ripped off sometimes. But frankly I don't have the time to be a part-time mechanic, doctor, vet, chef, insurance broker, etc.! If I could do these things myself I would and for much cheaper. Logical no?

Ouch. I sense a touch of sexism there. Not all men like to work with their hands. And not all women are ladies.

Apologies. Quite the contrary. If I was being sexist or negative, I would not have used "lady" or "nice man." My question stems from having this pleasant ongoing discussion with you, that's all. You sound very cute. :D

No need to answer though, it was an aside.

ROFLOL. I wonder how on earth you thought I was cute. If anything I was thinking you consider me a pain in the ass! :D

Would it make any difference to the conversation if I were in fact female? Just curious. ;)

Haha, not a pain at all. You should stick around here more, then you'll know what pain is.

You're melting my heart here.
