Im in the market for a new car, budget of around R180 000. Will be used during the week to travel to campus with 3 or 4 passengers. Currently im looking at the i20, kia rio(although I've read here that there's a 6 month waiting period for these, is that still the case?) Polo, Polo Vivo/GT. Any advice will be appreciated.

Ford Fiesta if you want a Hatch or Honda Ballade.

My money would probably go to the Kia Rio top end model, although I haven't driven one yet it seems the best bang for buck in that price category.

drove the rio. got all the bells and whistles. nice car. pm me and I can get a salesman to call you. he was very helpful and goes the extra mile.

whats your location?

You cannot go wrong with Korean. German/Jap are too expensive for what you get.

Keep in mind that Hyundai and Kia are sister companies and you will find a lot of similarities between the ranges.

The only advice I want to give you is ask for total purchase price from the dealer - registration; VAT; delivery (this is important); admin fees

The price will balloon a bit by the time they reveal all the costs as I discovered this year when I bought my first car.

^^^ yip but would definitely recommend safety film and a good wax. also watch out for the unnecessary long term maintenance plans.

This is why you go for Kia.

Maintenance plans and proper warranty are part of the purchase price, unlike the likes of VW where you still have to fork out for that on top of the already inflated price.

As someone said though the Honda Jazz is the best car you can buy in this segment but is quite pricey. But it might be worth comparing a Demo Jazz with a brand new Kia Rio.

yeah, there's a standard cover and extended cover depending on how long you wanna keep the car and km's expecting to travel.

OP: there's warranty and maintenance cover. ask the finance ppl/salesman for the comparison chart. i think its also available on the website.

If buying new is not a concern for you...for 180k you can buy a Ford Focus 2nd hand easily.
2011 or even 2012 model with LOW km.

I have an i20 and its pretty awesome. I wouldn't go for the maintenance plan option as I haven't used mine at all, the car just doesn't break/wear before the maintenance plan expires.
I think the Kia Rio is probably the best option out there now, it just looks bad-ass! Not sure about the repair centres though, I have heard they're quite *** - but that's just hearsay. Hyundai repair centres are brilliant as I know from first hand experience.

i think R180k might be a high budget for a student. why not get something smaller with great fuel economy? spend the extra on other stuff like partying.

Also, price and space are only two criteria. what else are you looking for in a car?

A decent hatchback will set you back at least 150k

The OP stated that his budget is around 180k. That puts a 2nd hand focus in his strike range. Either a 2012 1.6 Ambiente or 1.8SI 2011 - both in a hatch. The focus has exellent economy, a pleasure to drive and has a lot of boot space and good performance behind it too.

I am not saying that ANY of the other cars mentioned are not as good, merely pointing out that for his budget he can look at higher entry price cars 2nd hand that might offer a bit more. :)
