So am I right in saying we are just missing two cables for connection? The S and L?

I don't know. The connection that it goes into is marked + only.
I assume the capacitor is the blue thing on the Bosch.
If it was me I'd remove the one screw and check to see if the thing can swivel, as I said before worth a try, if it does not work you've lost nothing.

I tried.
The screw came off easily, but the other side is firm, I cannot swivel it free because the part of the regulator beneath is preventing this - it hits the side of the alternator.
Just my luck there's that there instead of a screw.

The S is covered,
It basically mean it is connected to that B+ terminal through a 7.5A fuse. Like this,
You just need to locate you ignition wire, which I suspect is the one that was connected to D+ and lastly the L wire.

I'm stumped, had a look on google and the pics all show screws.

It seems it's a threaded rivet.
It's screwed on from the underneath.

Simple then if it's like that, cut the head off, remove the regulator and you will deal with the screw/rivet afterwards. Or get a hacksaw and cut the screw in the middle and use a flat screwdriver to take it out. put some wd40 or something on it in the meanwhile.

Something interesting I thought about from this picture 
OP do you realise how many fuses you had to go through before you damaged your alternator with the cellphone charger? Your charger is on the 'loads' in the diagram and it also has built in protection, not to mention that it is still working while the alternator is dead?
