Car break in

About 10 years ago I recall an ou-toppie with a Venture around the block from where my girlfriend (now wife) stayed. The car was parked outside and he literally chained to a big old oak tree because it was stolen one too many times. He'd back it up till the tow-bar touched the tree and then took a chain around the tree securing the car to it.
Dunno if he has anything on Mr Bean though.. Lol

My old Ford Bantam was nearly stolen from a shopping centre parking lot (That's why I don't tip car guards). They busted the door lock, and tore up the ignition, key wouldn't go in at all, wheel lock was engaged. Had it towed for free by insurance to a mechanic and they replaced the ignition barrel for about R1150 so it's not too bad.

Since then I had central locking, alarm, impact sensors, anti hijacking, immobilizer and 20% smash and grab tints installed all for R2k it is well worth it

Not saying it's not worth it but if they want it, they'll take it.

regarding the keys..... and driving.
(have seen this, not mine)

car got stolen, but was found.

keys could not start car, but a screwdriver inserted in the ignition worked. Maybe try this?
rather than having 2 keys, the owner then opted to have all the locks changed.

I used to chain my back wheels together for similar reasons

Thank you everyone for the advice thus far.

Surely you call insurance and they organise to get it all fixed?

Insurance will take care of it at an excess of R2,500. So no way changing locks and ignition will cost more than that. I'm fuming here right now.

I dunno, new locks and keys with transponders cost 10k on my ford focus.
My cousins mini Cooper, R20k to change locks and keys.

It is a very old car. Nothing to the locks or key. The key is not coded, it is just a piece of metal. Nothing electronic to it at all just pieces of metal fitting together. Ignition with 2 keys is R320 so getting locks from a scrapyard can't be that expensive. Just my thinking.

Problem with this is those locks will have a separate key to the ignition then. Rather get a full locks and ignition set and only have one key.

Those are the new fangled keys. The replacement key for my subaru is ridiculously expensive. +R1000 just for the transponder chip. +R700 for the key blank. +R250 to cut key. More if you have lost your key number tag.

Now remember most of this work is farmed out to locksmiths. And then the dealership also adds a service markup.

That was my intention. Just got a price on an ignition to get an indication of what I can expect. Will have to go to scrapyard and check.

Okay just spoke to a lock smith. They will replace ignition and locks and modify it to work on my old keys for R1000. What do guys think?

Rather the 1k than have to run about with a whole bunch of keys.
