So, I am busy looking for a car for the GF. She is still a student so her budget is a bit tight. Max is R65000.

I have been looking on autotrader, and find mostly cars like the tata indica, kia picanto etc. Are these okay? I am not up to scratch with those brands, so there will most likely be someone on the forums with more knowledge than me.

She is looking for something that is moderately safe, as I know her budget wont get her all the fancy safety features.

Any advice of what to go for in this price range?

I'll be the one to go against the stream here. She's a student, get a R 20 - 30k car and save the rest. No need for a car valued at R 65k. Others are now going to tell you to stretch the budget a bit more :p

Kia picanto is fine for a student car ,same company who makes Hyundai cars.

I am happy with my atos prime , gets me around 5.8L/100km combined . Has air con, central locking, power steering ,electric windows, mp3/cd player.
I got the level 4 alarm with remote central locking for R2000 after I purchased the car.

Tata is junk don't touch it.

Get her a Golf. you cannot go wrong with that. or try Reeds

Get a Toyota. You can pick up a baby camry or older or a Tazz. Can't go wrong with Toyota. Wont give her any hassles.

As has been said: buy a tazz, save the rest. Make sure you have secure parking though (not as popular at citigolfs but still a thieves target).

With that said, if safety is a massive concern you could look at an old Ford Fiesta '04-'06, most of which have ABS and airbags and be within your specified budget.

Now you are selling him an atos prime, thats out of budget and not what he asked at all.

I agree with the others. Cheaper car, or even use the bus to varsity. My SO does that, bus everywhere.

Fiesta or yaris. They are the safest cars in that price range. She might be a good driver but others arent as careful. Please dont choose a golf/citi/tincan/#jawsoflife those cars should be removed from this country

Honda Jazz if you can get one at the price.

Otherwise nothing wrong with the Kia Picanto.
