Car guards going cashless

Digital payment solution Street Wallet is helping car guards across South Africa to increase and sometimes even double their daily income in an increasingly cashless society, the Sunday Times reports.

Street Wallet offers customers multiple ways of paying, including Scan to Pay using a quick response (QR) code, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, SnapScan, and Zapper.
 
How about, nope.

Street Wallet CEO Kosta Scholiadis told the Times that they have seen a 100% increase in tips for car guards using the app, with the average user paying R30 instead of R5 or R10.

BS - Who in their right mind tips a "car guard" R30.

True, but they pay to get their spot for the day. If the centers where truly concerned about security of their shoppers they wouldn't be getting free security that is based on the exploitation of others. They guys and gals could be formality employed and paid as such.
 
I use mobile money transfer (send to ATM code) , usually only if they've done something for me though. Like at Makro if they pack my car for me i'll give them R50-R100 or so. I do feel for them, but sometimes you also feel like you're harassed lol.

Sometimes they ask and i have no cash, i usually don't. So i just use the send cash option. a QR code would actually be even faster..

Good. I try to always keep a bit of cash on me. I chat with the guy at my local pnp, he is young and unemployed and he is tying to find better job. We always make small talk and he seems like a decent person. He told me his dad found a job for his brother in Cape Town (his dad is down there). I also feel for them. They do this for survival. We all know there aren't enough jobs for the population.
 
You are not paying to guard your car, you are paying for them not to damage your car next time you come to the same place in case they remember you...
 
City of Cape Town already has meter maids who have CC facilities. What other sort of car guards are there?
It's a public road, and if the city doesn't charge, then no charge is due. Paid parking does exist.

Always prefer malls with 1.5h of free parking. Or PnP or WW pay for your 90min otherwise. Some malls have no payment due at all and no car guards. Take Big Bay or Sunningdale. On the other hand Paddocks has guys who ask for money.
